A good friend and fellow former Marine, were shooting the breeze the other day..After talking about our medications for our malady's, the discussion came to our Chili recipes..
He mentioned that in-between a spoon of chili he would take a bite out of a dill pickle, to cleanse the palate..
I tried it ! Really good !
Has anyone tried this?

I love dill pickles !

Interesting. In Hopscotch (although I don't remember if it was in the Brian Garfield book or the Walter Matthau movie based on it) the girl tells the CIA-guy that the reason food tastes better with wine is the alcohol in the wine cuts the grease from your last mouthful, and cleanses the palette, so you taste the NEXT bite, not the previous one.

I suppose the vinegar in a pickle would do the same.

When I was a little kid, there was the neighborhood grocery store, "Crawford's", that still had a big pickle barrel. I think I was about twelve or so at the time. Anyway, my buddies and I would walk down to Crawford's store; we'd each fish out a big dill pickle, pay our dimes, and be on our way.

Since that time, I've always loved a good dill pickle. I found some in our local market that really aren't too bad. They're pickled with onions and a lot of garlic. You can get them pickled with a couple of jalapenos in there with them, too.

Dang! Just thinkin' about that makes me want to get up, walk to the fridge and dig out that jar of dill pickles.:D

I love Kosher dill pickles (half or new dills the most) and no one likes a big bowl of steaming chili more than I. The though of combining the two at one feeding however, sends the food side of my brain into an immediate tailspin.:confused::rolleyes::)

Finding good crispy pickles have been tough lately! Some of the brands that I used to enjoy have become "sog city" or just too loaded with Garlic. My newest favorites are the half sours from the barrel in our local super market.

I like the pickles from Sechlers in Ind. They have a Sweet and Hot mix that is great. Not so hot that you cannot sit and eat a few slices and some of the peppers in the jar, Hungarian and Pepperoncini.

Nothing liked a good deli half dill spear, or kosher pickled green tomato.

My late Grandmother would pickle green dill tomatoes, and green beans, as well as dill pickles..They were the best..
A neighbor lady makes Sweet and Hot pickles, they are really good, but they have some fire..:)

A fresh half sour when it looks exactly like a cucumber, number 1.

When I get the pickle out of the jar, I usually add a splash of juice to the bowl of chili. Great eating. Also like a splash of vinegar without the pickle. A little home made relish is also good with chili.

Never cared much for dill pickles. Even the ones they give you at the Jewish delis with your Rueben are not to my liking. However, bread and butter pickles are a different story. A jar of good bread and butters does not last long in my hands.

Now I'm thinking about some Talk 'o Texas pickled okra.

The pickles I really miss these days are Max's New Half Dills, big whole crispy cukes in a fizzy brine.
