I wasn't sure just where to put this. Friend and I were discussing various weapons recently and he raised the question of a sword cane. For some reason I thought there had been an "outlawing" of them some time back as a concealed weapon. Possibly back in GCA68 along with a lot of other "any other weapon" articles. Since IL has now a Concealed Carry would this be permitted by a licensed individual? I posted this question to the IL State Police about two weeks ago, and received no answer to date.

Does anyone have any definitive information on this? By buddy seems to think they have never been illegal to carry.

From what I understand, the CCW License, which actually stands for Concealed Carry Weapon, does include knives and other normally not allowed to carry weapons.

It is my understanding IL has no blade length limit, the question is the concealment.

In Illinois the CC law also says Firearm so am guessing it wouldn't be covered under the conceal carry law ..

I've tried to get clarification from the ISP through FOIA on several questions and they seem to hedge answering anything .. this is an answer to a question I had ..

"The Illinois State police is prohibited from offering legal
advise." The question was about if it was legal for us to carry a BUG .. or 2 concealed weapons ..

They are neat to have, but in my opinion not worth the risk to carry. One overanxious cop and you would have huge legal fees. People and the law in many states fear the knife more than the firearm. It just is not worth it!

Knife laws tend to be on the state and/or local level, so where you live will determine what may or may not be legal. At least in Texas, a CCW permit does not cover knives carried on the person that would otherwise be illegal. I do know Texas laws covering knives carried on the person have recently changed, but I really don't know what the changes are.

I looked it up - the following are illegal in Texas if carried on the person outside his residence:
…..(6) “Illegal knife” means a:
(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;
(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;
(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard;
(D) bowie knife;
(E) sword; or
(F) spear.
(7) “Knife” means any bladed hand instrument that is capable of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person with the instrument.

At least in Texas, switchblade and butterfly knives are legal to own (and carry, at least if they have blades less than 5-1/2"), but gravity knives are not. So there is a clear distinction between legality to own and legality to carry.

The last time I checked Sword Canes are among the things that are illegal in Ohio.

Not in VA-- it means a 'FIREARM' many other states, and I would bet Ill. will if they do not already, note what firearm you can carry-- Just saying. :) Mean while the punks in D.C. and other places run amuck beating the snot out of people who are not allowed by law to protect themselves.:mad: Something is more than wrong with a system that allows such goings on. :(

Buy a good, stout cane and take a couple short staff lessons. You will find it enlightening. When I travel for work I always carry a good cane. They always x-ray it at the airport but as nothing is concealed it always passes.

I'm guessing that in IL, even if knives and swords were covered, that there is no state supremacy clause for edged weapons. You would be subject to whims of every city and town ordinance in the state.

Missouri's CCW law exempts qualified persons (CCW holders, LEOSA, etc.) from this subsection of the Unlawful Use of Weapon statute:

"(1) Carries concealed upon or about his or her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use."

Thanks for all your comments. First, I don't want one, this was a discussion with a buddy who may have to start carrying a cane and was "wondering". We did determine that in IL they are legal. I don't see one in either of our futures.

As Walnutred says, a person is probably better off with a standard heavy cane, the kind you can get at the local feed store, than a sword cane. No one can question your possession of a cane (HIPPA) and one gives you additional distance from your adversary over a typical sword cane.

+1. By the time you get the sword unsheathed to use it, you'll probably be lying on the ground bleeding. In my estimation, a good solid hickory walking stick with a brass handle would be far more effective than a sword cane. Consider having to use a cane be a benefit of having white hair!
