I have spot in a closet that is under the stair landing for the second story and the height is only 52-1/2 inches. It would be ideal for a gun safe but I have searched many brands and can't find any safes that are that short, anyone know of a safe that is shorter than 52 inches?

You're not going to find a gun safe that short. You will need to look at commercial and residential safes. They can be expensive but also more secure depending on the model.

Here are some to look at. Also check your local safe store (not big box) or your local locksmith and see if they have anything in stock new or used. Nothing wrong with a good refurbished safe.

Residential | AMSEC Safes - Gun Safes, Security Products, Cash Management
Gardall | Products | Commercial Safes
Landmark LM3220 - Landmark - Series | Cannon Safe

I can recommend the Gardall. My mother has one in her closet for important documents, but it would keep a few pistols. You might have to build a little shelf inside to create a little more usable space. When we moved mom to her new retirement village, it took my brother and I and a sturdy two wheeler to get it moved. Mighty solid.

OP, depending on what you need to store in it, perhaps look at smaller pistol and personal safes. Those usually are in the 24-30" height range and can be found at places from Cabelas to Costco in the $250-300 area +/-.
