"Dragnet" TV show....
Just love it!!
Since I have Hulu now on my TV I've been re-discovering lots of vintage TV shows within their library of shows.
Over the past week I've been watching Several "Dragnet" episodes from the 60's & 70's.
I was far too young to appreciate this show when it originally aired.
Any others here like this classic cop show?

Had the best Christmas episode ever when they had to find a missing baby Jesus statue. Two versions exist, on from the 50s with officer Smith and the later one with officer Gannon.

I have several seasons on DVD....
Some are rather dated in the acting but fun to watch.

I remember when I was just a kid watching Adam-12 when it was a new series. It was on Saturday night at eight PM in Cincinnati. My absolute favorite show as a kid.

It's a great old show......
It' a great old show and I love the terse dialogue and the 'time line' format. Morgan and Webb were just right for the roles. The only problem I have is that some shows are a little 'dated'. (See 'Blue Boy').

The acting was awful (Webb & Morgan moved like robots), the dialog was terse, the lighting/production values were LOW budget, and I absolutely loved this show as a teenager. Never missed it.
As Point 357 said, Adam 12 (another Jack Webb production) was also on my watch list.
They both look very dated now but I still love watching them.

....real life day to day police work probably isn't THAT entertaining.
I read a book by a fighter pilot where he said that in real life, fighter pilots come off boring to anybody except other fighter pilots. His book was full of all kinds of 'techie' stories about the F4 and fighters in general. I ate it up.

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide
The LSD episode is just too much as Joe Friday cannot bring himself to say LSD, it is always lysergic acid diethylamide.

Jack Webb was a very good cornet player. He toured with his own band for years. He wanted to be a musician, but made more money as a producer/"actor".

I did watch "Adam-12" as a kid, but as a kid I just never got into "Dragnet" for some reason.
As some are saying the show is dated....but that is a part of it's charm in watching it today. Sort of a glimpse into past generations attitudes, fashions, technologies...etc.
What is especially interesting (to me anyway)...is the VERY minimal level of equipment seen in and on those older black & white squad cars. NO barrier cage behind the officers in the front seat as one example.
HULU has 4 complete seasons of "Dragnet" and so far I've watched all of season 1. I'll watch them all.
They also have many episodes of "Adam-12" which I will soon watch as well! Can't wait to see how many of these I'll remember from my youth!
Glad to know lots of you like the show!

I do, any WM has 2-3 seasons of it for sale at a sawbuck each.
Didja know that the movie: He Walked By Night---was what inspired Dragnet--and Jack Webb was in that movie as a detective--hunting down Richard Basehart. Its based on a true event that happened in 1947--when Officer Rollins was killed by the guy Baseharts character was based on.

There are letters to the editor frequently about the noise made by the
fighter jets at Gowen Field here in Boise. I wrote one a while back:
Recent letters to the editor concerning the noise made by the F-15s
nudged my memory. Those of us who are a little older remember the
television series "Dragnet".
Jack Webb played the part of LAPD Sergeant Joe Friday. He and his
partner were standing on a porch conversing with a lady when some
noisy fighter planes flew over.
The lady asked "Did you ever hear such a racket in your life?"
Joe Friday replied: "Yes, ma'am...at Pearl Harbor."
Freedom is not free. Some folks just don't get it.

Webb was a huge jazz fan. He did make more money as a producer than as an actor, but he was in a couple of big budget movies before he got into production.
Halls of Montezuma

I've watched the 1953 Dragnet movie several times. It holds up pretty well considering the age.
I've never seen the 1950's TV show and don't know if the prints even still exist. Much of the early history of TV is lost because much of it was on fragile media.
One last Jack Webb fun fact. He was the first husband of Julie London.

They don't make 'em like that anymore! I might have to take a peek into Hulu sometime. We have it available but haven't given it a look. So far Netflex had had all we can watch. Now it seems like it's time to broaden our tv watching horizons....

I have lived long enough to enjoy the the 50's version and the 60-70's series. I also remember the radio show.
They inspired me to become a police officer.

I'm probably on the younger side of the forum members, and definitely in the younger group of Dragnet fans. The show may seem dated, but I love the old cars, and the old guns.
One of the best clips is this one

I enjoyed, Dragnet, but preferred the less rigid, Adam 12. Joe Friday was too wooden and uptight.
Somewhere in the 1970's, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. starred on, The FBI, another good one.
And there was a whole slew of private eye series, like, Bourbon Street Beat, and 77 Sunset Strip.
These competed with Westerns as TV's main action fare.
Some of these series are on YouTube, inc., Tightrope and, Mannix.

Back in the day the show was one of the more watched and better shows on TV. I have watched the reruns and still like the show. Seeing how the show was on close to 50 years ago the reruns seem like new episodes now.

Jack Webb was influenced by LAPD Chief Parker, when he died I think the LAPD Gave Webb an "inspectors funeral", I remember when it was on the radio, that's where they developed the "clipped" monologue " "We were working the Day-Watch"

I was at gun auction in NE Ohio in the 90s, they auctioned 2 of
JWs guns. A M36 and Brn HP. Both were presentation pieces and
were custom cased and documented. The 36 had Badge 714 in
gold raised relief, both guns engraved and cases with presentation plates. They didn't bring that much, wish I had bid
on them.
