Telescoping side mirrors...

If you have them you know what I'm talking about.

I see more idiots driving around with them fully extended and not towing anything than I see when they are towing something.

If you are towing something I'll give you the space and respect to drive safely. If you aren't towing something then it's "game on". My mirrors are cheaper than yours and if you can't stay in your lane then I'm not responsible for what might happen.

Worst thing is you drive in the middle lane of a three lane highway and screw with people on both sides.

I'm betting the manual says to retract mirrors when not towing.

Your mirrors may be cheaper than the other guy's, but you'll end up paying for both, or your insurance will pay and you'll pay higher premiums.

"Game on" isn't a good driving strategy.

The responsibility falls on each driver being able to maintain control of their vehicle and all it's parts and to stay in their lane and not impede the progress of those around them.

Those mirrors are meant to assist the driver when towing something where regular mirrors don't afford a complete view of what's around them. If they were meant to be left extended at all times then they would be installed on all vehicles.
 
Usually its a RAM truck pulling ghost trailers with their mirrors out. I'm assuming the mirrors are so terrible they have to tilt them out to actually be able to use them.

Agreed with the first part entirely, but I don't think I've ever had a situation where tow mirrors impeded any progress of mine, and certainly not enough to make a thread about them. They're mirrors man, who cares? If you've got yours at the exact same height, are close enough to smack em, and see it as likely, that's still not a reason to go "game on" on someone's car. I don't sideswipe people because part of their car dared to enter my lane, I avoid it and give a honk.
 
My pastor got his mirror knocked off by one of these. I really don't get it of course I don't understand folks who drive a truck but are scared to haul anything for fear of scratching the bed, and dont get me started of folks that drive Jeeps, never get off the pavement. But hey drive what you want to it's a free country for now anyway.

Actually it's nearly the opposite. With the mirrors pivoted into the outer position, they block a serious amount of vision to the front corners. Enough to hide small cars, motorcycles and pedestrians in parking lots. They do slightly improve rear vision for towing when in the 'up' position.

I use mine for towing only, but on my dually, they are no wider than my rear fenders anyway.

Much amusement on the Dodge/Ram forums regarding 'ghost trailers' and mirrors. This pic gets posted a lot... :p

As a person that drove large CDL type trucks all over and has a lot of narrow space experience, things happen.

Company had about 10 trucks and at least once a month a truck would loose a mirror. Sometimes we were the hitie other times we were the hitted, its a fact of life with big trucks. A quick exchange of info with the driver that did the mistake taking credit and notifying dispatcher and all would be taken care of.

We either mailed out a check to fix a mirror or had one mailed in. Remember this was commercial driving. Many times your vechicle gets hit while parked or the hitie just keeps on going. As far as targeting someones mirrors we did not have time for that, we were too busy trying to avoid them.

The term "ghost trailer" gets used a lot around my neck of the woods, and the truth is it IS usually guys driving a RAM. We call 'em "DERGEBILLIES".
 
I have a couple of Dodges, a 2001 2500 and a 2006 3500 dually. I can assure you, without a doubt, that when driving with the mirrors out it is harder to see what is going on.

I'm just waiting for the fad to die so I don't have to be guilty by association.

In the meantime, my bone stock trucks keep getting more and more offers because people can't find a diesel that hasn't been ridden hard and put away wet. It's kinda sad how fads can just ruin certain types of vehicles when they come on strong.

There is a very good possibility that someone with the mirrors extended are staying in a campground. once the mirrors are set for towing it's easier to keep them set than readjusting every time you hook up.
 
re: Ram mirrors.
Having had two 3500HD DRW Rams I can assure you all you can see with the mirrors down is the front of the rear fender flares.

And with the mirrors down the convex section is all but useless.

My $.02, YMMV.

That's my point. Chances are that when you're camping you don't unhook.

Take your boat to the lake. If it's for the season you don't need the mirrors extended for the next couple of months. If you are only there for the day you haven't unhooked the trailer and everything is fine.

I made my point and am happy with it. There are thousands of rants about bad drivers. Drivers hanging out in the left lane for miles. Drivers with their turn signal left on. Not once have I posted "Hey,you don't like it then go around them and quit complaining."

Done here.
 
It's a discussion forum, not everybody is going to agree with every complaint or idea posted. Sorry that it seems that's not what you're after, but man it would be a super boring place otherwise.
