Hope this is the appropriate forum.

I’m getting to that point where it may be time to lighten the load.

Before getting started, I’d like to be sure of safe, economical and legal methods of shipping hand guns & long guns.
ShipMyGun, a division of Bud’s gun shop, sounds like a reasonable and convenient solution.

Any experience with them?
Any good alternatives?

Many threads on this. They are good as long as the receiving FFL will accept shipment from an individual with ID.
SMG only provides the shipping label.

You can ship long guns yourself through USPS for not a lot of money.

I just go into the LGS close to home. They are convenient, polite and charge a reasonable fee. Unless you are in the business of selling guns for a living, a shipment here or there doesn't matter too much as long as your LGS is a descent one not looking to gouge customers.

I am sure you could save a few bucks going through a discount gun shipping service but you need to ask yourself if it's actually worth the trouble. For me it's not - I don't sell enough to matter.

I just know thought of this. (guess i never really Knew it) If you /we use ship my gun, how are we not breaking Fed Ex and UPS rules since SMG. does not use their FFL?

To ensure they do not get "lost/stolen" in the USPS system, ship them via USPS Registered Mail. It costs a bit more but it is worth it.

I’d say if you intend to sell several guns. Tell the FFL of your choosing. He might offer a discount if he’s shipping 10 guns . I know I would

SMG has a contractual relationship with UPS. My understanding is that are owned by Bud's Guns, a major firearms dealer, which of course has an FFL, so maybe, probably, SMG is using the same one, is my speculation.

One can also legally ship a gun back to its manufacturer, with a label they provide to you, and they can ship it directly back to you. I think Sig uses FEDEX for this, IIRC. I assume SMG has a similar contractual relationship with UPS.

In SMG's case, a private individual can ship a handgun to an FFL, along with a copy of one's driver's license, IF the FFL one is shipping to is registered with SMG. In my experience using the service, if my buyer's preferred FFL is not registered with SMG, and does not want to register with SMG, there is invariably a nearby FFL who is registered with SMG.

After I paid $100 to ship a $600 or so handgun via a local FFL, I found SMG which enables me to ship, insured, for about $40.

I just shipped two guns to a fellow SWCA member using ship my gun service. i checked the cost to ship it without using them. Over $100 versus $45. Local UPS stores have to take them since UPS closed all of their customer service centers across the US It took one day for the label to be emailed to me and 3 minutes at the UPS store.

Can you ship more than one gun in the same package or must they be individually packaged?

For what it's worth, SMG told me that the reason they ask, on their website, what size the package is, when you buy a label from them, is because they used to provide/sell boxes. They stopped providing boxes because too many people complained about their boxes arriving damaged. They told me that box size is now irrelevant, and that what matters is weight.

I, too, asked SMG about shipping more than one gun in a box. They discouraged this, but not very convincingly, and did not say that I couldn't do it. If memory serves, you can insure up to $4000. I shipped two guns in one box once, when I sold two to the same buyer, insuring the box for their full value.

Good idea to put “ using SMG, be sure your FFL will accept shipment” in any gun ad you may post.
A list of FFLs comes up by zip code. If your buyer's FFL is listed it's easy. If not listed you need to get them to ok it. Dont know about that as my buyer's FFL was listed.
