Daystar...

Oh yeah Jack Lord. Anyone recall Stoney Burke. Warren Oates was a regular. Series did not last long however.

Stoney Burke was the brainchild of Leslie Stevens who also produced 'The Outer Limits'. Warren Oates had a well know role where radiation turned him into a bug-eyed mutant. Casually known as the 'Fried Egg Monster'.

I REALLY like....

Wikipedia said: Amanda Blake (February 20, 1929 – August 16, 1989) was an American actress best known for the role of the red-haired saloon proprietress "Miss Kitty Russell" on the television western Gunsmoke.

I really like looking back at younger pictures of stars we grew up with. If they were amazing when we saw them check them out in full bloom.:):):)

Geeze ... sounds like the Lois Lane gals that vied for Superman's attention in the old Superman serials.

Both Lois's did tons of "B" movies as well as western tv series roles. Both were in Tombstone Territory, The Rifleman, Rawhide but so far, I havent seen either appear in Gunsmoke--but im only on disc 1 of season 2 now. 18 more seasons to go.:)

A correction/update. I gave now seen Phyllis Coates in an episode. Dont remember her role? but probably a barfly.

Not Gunsmoke but, it'll have to do:

I saw Milburn Saturday night on an old movie on ME TV called Captive Wild Woman(1943). He was animal trainer in it and his in the cage action shots were actually Clyde Beatty (of Clyde Beatty's Circus) as his double.

He's great in a very rarely aired movie--as a trooper-in: The Savage-with Charlton Heston as a captive white who was raised by the Indians. He is supposed to lead the cavalry into an ambush, but changes sides at the last moment.
Milburn Stone is the corporal.

Stone was also Heston's sidekick in another excellent movie: Arrowhead:

On Chester, a season 2 episode confirmed he was in the yankee military--not Confederate. He mentions serving with a yank sergeant who is stationed at some nearby fort.

I have the first 10 seasons of Gunsmoke DVDs and am working my way through them. The shows are half-hour for the first 6 seasons. I have noticed that Matt almost always kills at least one guy in the half-hour shows. Oddly, the character development is minimal in the short shows and somewhat over done in the hour long versions. Matt doesn't always kill people in every long show. It is fun to spot all the actors who eventually had their own shows. FYI....Chester was in the Confederate army...and is the only character who drawls.

My Dad and I used to listen to the radio Gunsmoke while working in the barn. William Conrad voiced Matt(a rotund fellow who had several TV shows of his own) and Parley Baer voiced Chester. Kitty was clearly a Ho and Doc was an alcoholic.

Some of the DVDs have a sampling of commercials. The two products mentioned are L&M cigs which Matt puffs on and Remington electric shavers.

That's interesting and muchos gracias. Ill be collecting seasons up to about 15 seasons--eventually. Ill have to rewatch a disc 1 season 2 episode because-Chester mentioned being a yankee and serving with the guy who was Mess Sergeant at the nearby Fort. Ill see if I misheard, but dont think so. Maybe Chester was an ex-Confederate who did post CW duty as a yank?

Not to go way off subject but I have an old WWII every girlie deck of cards with Betty White topless. Deck named "Models of all Nations" 1940s or early 1950s. She used to be a dish. :)

I HAD a few singles from that set but they disappeared about 30 years ago. Those were/are hard to come by. I had maybe 4-5?? and I cant remember the names of the ones I had.

Speaking also of Gunsmoke--there is a series of collector cards out made by someone in England.

Some of my favorite villains so far from Gunsmoke:
First while thinking of it--vintage collector cards:

Lee Van Cleef:

Pat Conway: Cant find an image of him in Gunsmoke-but this is close

Charles Bronson as Crego-the first man Dillon desperately wanted to kill:

Chris Alcade:

Leo Gordon:

Claude Akins: There doesnt seem to be an image of him in season 1, but this is close:

Ive forgotten the names of a few who made great bad guys-that ive seen in season 1. Not listing others till I see them.

Ill add a few more bad guys when I can? These will include: K.L. Smith and Mort Mills. Btw, confirmed in a season 2 episode--Chester served first as a CONFEDERATE--SERVING as a cook with them in surrounded Petersburg? or some burg. Then after the war--served briefly as a cook for the Yanks.

When I was growing up, all we had was a black and white TV. In fact I thought WWII was fought in black and white. :p

Was Gunsmoke ever shot in color?

I dont know how many seasons were in color? but at least several were. It was on TV from 55-75. I only ever saw color episodes and never any B&W till I purchased season 1-about a year ago-and the 4 season set from last month. I HOPE, they will have another 4 season set-seasons 5-8?

... There were a few episodes where Pat Hengle played the Dr. Don't know why Milburn Stone didn't appear.
Milburn Stone had a heart attack and had to take a year off.

Amanda Blake quit after 19 years. So technically, James Arness was the only one who was with the show its entire run.

Never liked Dennis weaver. Not only did not like him in G'smoke but in anything he played in. My Fav. characters were and still are Doc, Festus, and Sam the bartender. There were a few episodes where Pat Hengle
played the Dr. Don't know why Milburn Stone didn't appear.

I'm not a big fan of Weaver but, having not seen Gunsmoke seasons 1-4 before--cept for season 1, I don't mind him except that annoying "Mr. Dillon" instead of "Matt-or-Marshall Dillon" something better.

I'm running out of time but will be back Monday to try finishing my thoughts.

We always laughed at the mountains in the distance. Dodge City is way, way, way far from the mountains. It's pretty darn flat there.

Wait till you see that season 2 or 3 episode of Rawhide that had two of the cast -- shanghaied for Jury duty--mountains in the background of a scene that was in "Neuces County.":rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Amanda Blake

Festus was my hero.

Down to earth, a man you could depend on and funny as heck.
