J Frame AFK Serial Number???

A friend of a friend knows I love old S&Ws and asked about a model 36 he just picked up. J frames aren't my area of expertise (if I even have one). He is wondering more about it...

Model 36
AFK 50xx
97931 (assembly #??)
C1

I asked if there was a number and a dash and he said there was not, but that the AFK number above is what's on the butt.

The prefix appears to be from late 1984.

I agree with Alan's age assessment.

I'm guessing it's a 2" Chiefs Special.

Is it blue or nickel?

What keeps getting me is that it is only stamped "MOD. 36," without any dashes or engineering change numbers. Was there not enough room?

The model 36 was made from 1958 to 1988 (replaced by the 36-2), so no need for extra stampings.

Time frame for production is the same as for the above model 36. Is this gun also a model 36?
