My journey west completed and we closed on my house in Arizona last Friday. We've been vacationing in Arizona for almost 20 years with plans to retire here and here we are!

As I stated in a thread before we left, we had 6 cats to get across the country and rented an RV to make the journey. It was a miserable experience all in all. The cats were great, kept them in carriers days and let them out nights to roam around the RV. Vet had given me sedatives for them, but by the third day we decided that they did better without them and it worked out great. They spent upwards of 10 hours a day in the carriers with no problem.

The problems were with the RV. Picked it up in New Hampshire, smelled like an outhouse and was pretty much filthy, drove it back to Maine, cleaned it up tried everything we could to get the smell out but nothing worked. We left on a Thursday, closed on our house in Maine on the way out of town and spent the first night in New Hampshire. This is when we found that the refrigerator didn't work. Spent 45 minutes on the phone with the rental company and found that the fridge was unhooked. Got that going, and then we found that the hot water didn't work. When you turned the heater on you could hear the heater running, but no hot water out of the tap. Didn't even bother to call them about that. We had campgrounds booked all across the country and didn't use the bathroom because we didn't want to increase the stink so we really didn't need hot water. Just stopped in rest stops during the day.

When we started out we were getting about 10 mpg, by the time we hit Arkansas we were down to about 6!

Going through Oklahoma west on I40, there were gusty south winds, I was running in the right hand lane with the cruise set, 18 wheeler was passing, gust of wind blew him right into my lane, and right into the part of the camper that hangs over the cab. Crumpled the left front of the camper up bigtime! Trucker didn't stop, but in all honesty he probably didn't even realize he hit me. I did buy the zero fault insurance when I picked the RV up, thank goodness! Good thing is we were delayed 1 day leaving Maine and Oklahoma had tornados the day before and the day after we went through.

Arrived in Arizona on Wednesday morning with plans to hole up in an RV park until we closed on Friday. Found the the surveyor messed up the survey. Check out time at the RV park was 11 am that Friday and the movers were coming Saturday morning so we sat in a hot RV with 6 cats all day Friday and finally closed at 4:54pm. Just a little stressful!

I know nothing worthwhile comes easy, and we are happy to be here. Everyone we have talked to here in Arizona has been super friendly and made us feel welcome so we know we made the right decision. The last week has been spent settling in and getting supplies and furniture. We still have a long ways to go before we can kick back and enjoy retirement but every day we get a little closer realizing that dream!

We got a nice house on 2 acres and couldn't be happier.

Congrats……. My question is why couldn’t you close online via emails?
I’ve done it when purchasing out of state properties. It would have eliminated a lot of your stress and anxiety.

Hi Mr. MIKEB,

I'm so sorry about your bad experience with the rental RV. If you ever have a repeat of that occurrence, there is an easy way to get rid of bad smells.

It's called OZIUM and you can find it at any AUTO Zone parts store.

I truly believe this stuff will eliminate any odors you may encounter. Just be sure to follow the directions!

Just remember that there is a reason why Arizona is different from New England. Far too many people want to change their new residence to be just like their old. I doubt that is your problem, but there are far too many you do.

Part of the reason why I left Maine is "people from away" had moved in and pretty much made the state unrecognizable. I like Arizona just the way it is, kind of like Maine used to be!

That and the weather! I definitely don't want that to be like Maine!

I could have closed online, but the title agency was only about 7 miles from the house. The reason for the delayed closing was that the surveyor had messed up and done the survey incorrectly so we had to wait for that to be straightened out.

Your story reminded me of a National Lampoon / Chevy Chase story.

After experiencing New England Winters I hope Arizona Summers aren't too hot for you.

This take literally pops up every time someone relocates. They are heading to greener pastures because they prefer the lifestyle it offers. Especially someone from this forum. They don’t need the lecture.

Hope the move works out for you. I grew up in Southern California in the 1960s-70s. It was paradise. But I saw the writing on the wall and moved to Arizona 32 years ago. Loved everything about it, including the heat. But as I've gotten older the last few years summers have really gotten to me. And the things I fled are creeping in from the West. I've been considering the snowbird thing, but when I retire in a few years I'll probably bail completely for Idaho or Montana (where I have family and friends). I know I won't be able escape the California invaders, but at least I'll get four seasons and relief from the heat. And real rivers.

There's a reason this pops up all the time. Though we welcome folks who want to share our lifestyle, many of us have already directly suffered from the invasion of blue state refugees. We've seen the reality of it up close, over and over. It's easy to pull up stakes; it's harder to change your spots, and many folks just can't leave the big city/right/left coast habits and attitude behind.

I do think madmikeb is going to fit in just fine.

When I hear "greener pastures" my first thoughts are of gun regulations, crime, etc.

I often hear about how draconian laws are now being passed in states that were once bastions of freedom.

THAT's why I think I'll stay in NY. It can't get any worse (OMG I can't believe I just said that), but at least we know what we've got.

Jim I’ve said it a hundred times. The problem with Western NY is that it’s in NY. There is no prettier landscape than our Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region. The Great Lakes are the best fishery in the world as far as I’m concerned. But the laws, taxes, and politics make it hard to want to stay. And the 6 months of gray skies seem worse the older I get. When I head south for good I will bring one thing with me. And I don’t care who dislikes it. The mighty Buffalo Bills!!!!!!!!
