I'm looking for a gunsmith who is comfortable around 5 and 4 screw revolvers. I have two K-frames with timing issues. I contacted, via e-mail, a highly recommended 'smith in Austin an asked if they worked on 4-screw S&Ws and their response was that they work on all S&W revolvers. Not engendering much confidence since they didn't answer the question.

I live in Elgin, TX and can travel as far as Taylor, TX if needed or North Austin if that's all there is. I don't want to ship either guns off so someone close to me is a necessity.

Thanks
Chris

Yes. I asked a specific question and was looking for a specific answer. The answer I got left doubt in my mind that they knew there were differences in S&W revolvers. It may be just me, but when I ask a specific question I am looking for a specific answer.

The fundamental operating mechanisms of a 3/4/5 screw gun are the same. If I were a highly recommended gunsmith, and someone asked me if I could work on a 4 or 5 screw gun, I would probably assume that the person asking the question didn't know much about guns.

It would be like asking a mechanic if they know how to work an engine with 4 or 6 cylinders.

Ten Ring Precision is in San Antonio. They have a good reputation. I'm sure they could do about anything you wanted.
Alex is getting well up in years, probably close to 85. He may not still be working. I haven't seen him in about five years. Best to check that he is still accepting work. He has always been a one-man shop as long as I have known him but it is possible he is working with someone else now. His shop is just north of the San Antonio airport.

Austin gunsmith

Tyler at Liberty Gunsmiths Works on my Smiths, I recommend him although he is on South Congress a couple red lights down from Ben White (290 W). Bobby was the go to gunsmith but he retired.
SWCA 892
PS, his shop is on the right behind EZ Pawn. And I know he works on All Smiths not just new stuff.

You can learn more about a person, in a five minute phone call, than you can in 10 pages of email or texts. Give them a quick call and feel them out.

They are the same but for the extra screw or two.
All the mechanism is exactly the same.
K and N frames 3 4 5 screw are the same mechanically but for the sizes.

Good call. I have an Omega Speedmaster that needed work. I called a local tech school that has a watch repair program and asked them if they worked on Omega's. He said yes, but then later during the conversation he said he couldn't wait to see it because he had never seen one. Thank you no thank you. I sent it to Omega....
