This is not one of the Missouri Highway Patrol guns from 1952 because it is a 4 screw from about 1956. I just picked it up from my FFL transfer buddy and it looks a lot better than I thought it would. Below is a quick snap shot to post for now. The non-relieved targets are period correct as is the box. The end label has the 4 overwritten by a 5, probably because S&W did not have a label for a 5" Combat Masterpiece. Serial numbers all match on the butt, barrel flat, cylinder and yoke, plus in white grease pencil on the bottom of the box. White outline rear sight. K274386. This is a righteous gun but I've never heard of one. I sent for a letter as soon as I won this lot (~7 Apr.) so I am waiting to hear the definitive word. I would definitely like to hear from the experts, or anyone else, about this thing. From what I understand this is a pretty rare gun.IMG_1863.JPG

The Illinois State Police bought around 250 in the mid 50s. Mine is K303345, it has the standard semi target hammer and relieved football diamond targets. The hammer on yours is the speed hammer and it has non relieved targets. I don't know enough about the Illinois State Police guns to know if all the serial numbers were in the 303xxx range.

That is a dream gun for me. My favorite post war Smith is the K-38 Heavy Masterpiece, (shot one of mine today) and any variation of it. A five nice gun is on my list. That’s a beauty.

Very Nice, I went on a hunt and see another 5" CM for sale, NOT cheap . 5 screw from 1955, K 234---. HH Harris 1 of 6. I bet yours ends up being a special order also. Wish I could, but I can't or won't. I am sure yours will have an equal or greater value. In case you want to compare.

The ISP guns were heavy barrel, wide-rib guns so are usually called 5" K-38 Masterpieces, as opposed to the tapered barrel MSHP guns (like the OP's) that are .38 Combat Masterpieces. But good on you for owning one of either! :)
