Found a 4" square butt NY1 to go with my 4" RB and 2" RB. This one is not vapor honed but does have the SN on the left side below the cylinder. Still looking for a 3" at the right price.

They all have model numbers. As I understand the requirement for side SN came shortly after the NYPD DAO requirement. Then Vapor honed finish and side SN.

My understanding is that the etching facilitated inventory/inspection without the need to remove stocks that covered the S/N on the butt.

Yours has a model number 64. Just not the dash indicating engineering changes. My RB 64 is the same. It is stamped mod 64 but no dash. Based on features and date of production it is a 4 or 5/.
From my research here and other places the side SN was mandated by the PD to facilitate access to the SN without removing grips. Most I have seen with side SN are vapor hone finished. But my 4" SB has the side SN but standard finish.

The later guns were etched. Just a more efficient way to do it would be my guess.
