In 1979, O.F. Mossberg & Sons introduced the Model 590 combat shotgun to fill the role of a modern trench shotgun for the U.S. Armed Forces:

Differing from the earlier Model 500 design, the M590 featured a new clean-out magazine tube system that was a great improvement on the 500. Some other features meant for the military include a bayonet lug and heat shield.
These are fantastic little shooters. The USMC and others bought various SKU’s of the M590 throughout the 1980’s well into the 2000’s and they served with excellent reputation during the War on Terror and in other conflicts around the globe.
In the late 1990’s the M590A1 was introduced which featured a heavy wall barrel and parkerized finish along with metal trigger group and safety for increased durability. But the earlier 500s and 590s continued to serve with distinction and made up the bulk of DoD fulfillments.
The above example was purchased by me as a police trade in surplus gun. Typical of trade police trade ins, it has some cosmetic wear but mechanically is excellent. It’s the smoothest Mossberg I’ve ever fired and it serves as my bedside protection.
