I used to use Green Dot in .38 Special, and 9mm. now I want to try it in 45 ACP also. Data used to be available for these. Now I can't find anything. Yes I know that it is geared to shotshell, but it used to do the job, and powder is hard to find. Please HELP if you can. Not in my Lyman book. Thanks, Bob

Alliant Powder currently only lists one load for the 45acp using GreenDot..
Alliant Powder - Reloader's Guide

Older loading manuals (60's) from Lyman will probably have G/Dot loads. Seems like we used to use it in the 45acp along w/ Red Dot,,two shotgun powders we always had on hand.
But there are usually reasons why old data is changed or deleted from newer manuals.
Some may be for safety reasons and some for purely marketing use. They never tell you why however.

Powders get reformulated over time changing the characteristics. This may yield improved performance for some applications while disqualifying it from other, previously legitimate applications. Loading new powder against old load data can result in dangerous situations as burn rates and pressures may now far exceed that of previous formulations.

That being said, Handloads.com lists a number of Green Dot loads for .45ACP.

If this were true it would be, to quote my Uncle Art Levine (may he rest in peace), "a liability nightmare."

"Hey Frank! How about we make 2400 burn like Bullseye does! I know we've got years and years of data out there saying to put so much 2400 under such-and-such bullet, but - hey, why not change things up?" Said no one, ever. (And, regardless of what you might think of them, you can thank tort lawyers for that - take a walk through the streets in a foreign country if you want to see what it's like under a system of diminished liability. Just try not to fall into the inevitable open manhole cover . . . . )

I've loaded Green Dot in both .45 and .38 - after some issues, I would caution you against the loads found in the Speer # 8, but there're many loads easily available. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if a search of this board would turn up some of mine. :)

In the "infamous" Speer #8 there are no loads with green dot in 45 acp.

Speer #9 lists loads using green dot for a 200 gr. lead swc (swaged), a 200 gr. jacketed hollow point and a 225 gr. jacketed hollow point.

Which bullet you using ?

Green Dot

Alliant has listed for 45ACP 230 gr. Speer LRN 5.3 gr. Velocity 842.
Thanks for the replies so far!! I found on 1 of my data stickers on an old 9mm box of reloads, 4.2 gr. 115 plated.
I still have not found anything for 38 Special.
I emailed Alliant with some of my questions. They should get back, but it takes a few days. Thanks, Bob

If this is the case, explain to me the differences in load data for IMR-4227 manufactured in Canada versus IMR-4227 manufactured in Australia. This one example comes directly to mind as I had been sorting through the load data for these when IMR transitioned to Hodgdon. I think if you were to go back and compare load data 30 years ago to what is is today, you will find in certain cases that the loads are getting lighter to due improved formulations.

Speer #9

Speer 9 has several loads listed for green dot. When I find them I'll update this.

Update:

Here is the data for .45 ACP with Green Dot

.452 lead swc 200 grains 4.6 to 5.0 gr GD 729-833 fps

.451 JHP 200 grains 5.6 to 6.0 gr GD 896-957 fps

.451 JHP 225 grains 5.3 to 5.7 gr GD 762-813 fps.

If you can find a 1998 Alliant powder reloaders guide it will have lots of data for you..................

the 200 Gr Lsw target load has 4.3 grs of Green Dot at 9,900 cup. Sorry but I don't usually give out data on the internet, but that's a start.

PM sent w/below data. Velocity chronoed.

OAL Gun Barrel Weight Bullet Powder Charge Velocity

1.200 Sig 1911 5" 230 FMJ Am Slct 5.0 784

My "go to" resource for Green Dot and other obscure loads is my old (undated) Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.
Green dot loads mor many bullet weights in virtually every handgun caliber.
I love Green (and Red) Dot!

Got this site from another post somewhere:
Alliant Manuals
It has most of the Alliant free reloading manuals plus one from Hercules.

Thanks for the replies! I've got everything covered except 40's. When powder becomes more available, I will probably get Clays again. Bob
