PTG: never again!!!!

I made the mistake of trying to order a custom uni-throater from ptg over a month ago. What a HUGE mistake it turned out to be!!!!!

It started out bad from the beginning, they didn't get the order right. I called them a week later & asked them to correct my order & to please update my invoice & e-mail me a new total. Of course that never happened so 2 weeks later I called them again asking if they update my order & please send me a total. The lady said she couldn't find my order (I gave her the conformation # they originally sent me with my order). The # meant nothing and asked my name and address all over again along with what did I want to order. From there she told me that I didn't need to wait for a uni-throater to be made & that they have them on the shelve ready to ship.

I told her I was special ordering one and told her the dimensions of what I wanted & asked if she knew how long it would take to have one made. She said "Ya, I guess we should give you an idea of how long it will be". And" I'm not sure." Then she hung up the phone.

So today, a month later I call them & get the what's your name? What did you order? O, we have them on the shelve, yada/yada/yada. At this point I don't want anything more to do with them & try to cancel my order.

That's when the lady from PTG got real nasty with me & started cussing me.
They never did get my order right
They never did tell me how much I owed them
They never did send me anything
Heck, I tried 3 times to get a t-handle with my order (those throaters are hard to turn with my fingers) and never was able to buy one with or without the custom throater.
The lady from ptg said I wasn't getting $hit back because they already started the custom order. I said that's funny, The other lady I talked to less than 2 minutes ago couldn't find a order for me & didn't even know what I was trying to order but after taking my name & address she was going to send me a uni-throater off the shelve.

It got real nasty when I told her that and she really started screaming and cussing. That's when I had enough & told her to kiss my irish a$$ and hung up. Called the credit card co & disputed the ptg charge.

I know there's a 15% restocking fee & I'll gladly pay it just to be rid of them even though they did absolutely nothing to earn it.

On the bright side, they ain't the only fish in the sea. I called David Mason today & in 2 minutes he had my order and I actually got a total for my order and even a delivery date, 28 days.

All's I can say is if you order anything from ptg, be careful. All's they did for me was give me the run-around for a month & then cuss me out when I finely had enough and wanted my money back.

not sure if they retain their sterling reputation for custom work, but that's the niche they filled from day one.

Wow, the lady on the phone actually cussed you and they are the ones who didn't get the order right after over a month. You are lucky to be done with them but one thing. I would also dispute the restocking fee since you were told they didn't even know what you ordered before you asked for your money back.

Ya, it got real bad real quick. After the cussing I could see it wasn't going anywhere (didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out) and told the lady there was no point in continuing the conversation. I'd let the credit card co handle it and hung up.

That's when it got real bad. She called me back (have the phone records to prove it) and the screaming got louder & the cussing got worse. That's when I told her to kiss my irish a$$ and hung up again.

Never again, nothing but lies, getting the run around & then being cussed at when I tried to walk away.

+1 for Manson. I buy my cylinder throating reamers from them and have nothing but excellent things to say about them. They always have a very knowledgeable person to answer your questions when I have called.

That's the 1, I just wish I did a little research before I ordered from them. What happened seems to be fairly common with them.

Sent a dispute out to the credit card co @ 5pm est & got my $$$$ refunded & back in my account @ 3am est. No 15% restocking fee either, there was nothing to restock.

I was trying to order a custom uni-throater from them. Specifically a 30-cal uni-throater. A throating reamer extends the throat out further into the bbl, hence, longer bullets can be used/chambered.

More specifically I wanted the uni-reamer for custom savage 308 puma rifle. The 308's chamber is designed for a short bullet (147g/155g) and only has a 1/8" throat with a 1 1/2* taper (angle) into the bbl. When I try to use/shoot long heavy cast lead bullets in a standard 308 chamber/throat/leade, the bullet sits way back in the case with the bullet's base in the powder/past the neck(in the boiler room).

I was trying to order a custom uni-throater with a .310dia and 3/8" taper on each side for a 3/4* total taper. A standard ptg throater is .3085 with a 1 1/2* taper.

Manson can and is making the same tool for me & I should have it by the end of october. I plan on using the throating tool to:
Cut the throat on a new (never fired) custom 24" match grade bbl for a specific cast bullet. (egan mx4-30a)
Make a custom sizing die for a lyman 450. (use the throater to make the shape of the sizing die/nose down to shape nose to throat/perfect fit). This will be used with an egan mx2-30 and a saeco 301 cast bullet.
Make a bullet mold from a blank mold/cut mold with throating tool to make a bullet the same size/shape as the bbl's recut throat.

The bullet mold will cast a bullet 2/100th's smaller than it's cut size (.310), due to shrinkage. Those undersized cast bullets will then be powder coated to bring them back to the .310+ diameter and sized in the custom sizing die to make them a perfect fit to the throat/bbl.

Should make a good winter project.

I too would dispute a 15% restocking fee. What's to restock? Personally this country boy wouldn't give them 15% of the sweat off my *%$@#!

Who is PTG ?

I had ordered a 5* forcing cone reamer from either Midway or Brownells (can't remember which one), and it was ****. Wouldn't cut at all.
Emailed PTG to see if they could make me one and was told they could. I gave them the specs I wanted and had it in about 3 weeks or less. Used it and it broke into 3 pieces. Had been over hardened, and was not to my specs either. Contacted them about the problems, and they made me another one, this time to my specs, and it works great. No problems with them and I would order from them again.
Personnel I dealt with we're very nice. Sorry to hear about your poor dealings with them.

I have had a lot of trouble with them as well.
First instance, ordered a 6.5CM pull-through. Took them months to get me anything and then what I got was a standard reamer. Took another couple months to get the new one, then despite having told me first it was $x and then later that the pull-through was more but they wouldn't charge me the extra, they then billed me the higher price and still hadn't credited the returned incorrect reamer. Then they did credit the incorrect reamer, but less the 15% restock fee. I finally got a refund for the extra 15% but not the shipping. At that point I gave up and was glad to have the reamer and be done. A year later I tried to use the reamer only to have it explode immediately.
While this was going on, a friend asked me to do a chamber and we ordered a PTG pull-through. That one got lost in shipping, so another was ordered and arrived, only to shatter when I was attempting to use it.
The first one later did show up and worked fine, but dang.
So, two over-hard reamers and a lot of customer-service grief, I'm done.

Lately I've bought a couple reamers off ePay from an outfit in Ukraine. They have been cheap and look a bit crude, but have cut fine and so far no complaints about accuracy.

Surprised PTG is still in business what with their reputation (such as it is) following them all these years.

I ordered a square to round butt outline guides from them last year and it was an absolutely normal transaction. I paid, they delivered. I've also bought other things from them without problem.

They are not over hardened, but either not tempered or under tempered.

First it would be fully hardened to convert as much of the steel as possible to Martensite, tempered is very brittle, then the tempering decreases the size of the shard like Martensite structures to make it both softer and tougher. The temperature, number and duration of temper cycle or cycles will determine final hardness and toughness

Not so much a language purist, just want people to understand metal heat treatment

In any event, I will not bee ordering any reamers from them after the ops horror story. I have discovered that when I have a pleasant experience dealing with a company's employee everything will work out well. When I deal with an angry employee it is usually the sign that things are not well at that company and there will be more problems than anything else.

Count me among those who had a very poor experience with Pacific Tool & Gauge. Not only was the customer service terrible, the part was badly machined and out of spec. I received no response to repeated attempts to return the item. I finally gave up and figured lesson learned. The part was pitched in the trash and I will never order anything from them again. I recommend to everyone on the forum to avoid doing business with them.
