Which primers? (Assuming I can buy some)

I just ordered a Lyman reloading kit. It is a few months out and in the meantime I want to have supplies on hand when it arrives. I also ordered a three piece die set in 44 Magnum.

Which primers should I buy?

Don

44 Magnum. Whew! You sure believe in jumping in with both feet.

What powder are you going to use?

Magnum loads perform best with slow burning powder and large pistol magnum primers.

44 Special will be fine with regular large pistol primers.

Whichever ones your load data recommends, quite simply.

If you're loading 44 Magnum, you'll need either standard or magnum large pistol primers, depending on the loads you're using.

When I have a choice I use cci only buying federals for their softness to use in my Mannlicher 7.65 automatic pistol and it’s anemic hammer spring. Even though I’ve lightened springs in my vaqueros, ‘03s, krags, N frame smiths and colts I’ve never had issues with the harder cci primers.

Since availability is the main consideration now, I think I'd look for large pistol magnum primers, if I chose a slow burning powder (H110/W296, 4227) magnums are best. Magnum primers can be used with any powder (with proper load work ups) but standard primers normally aren't used for the H110/W296 type powders...

willing to trade
