I ran into something last night that I didnt even know existed, small primer 10mm cases by FC. Why? Why do they need to do that? They're making 10mm in a primer size that's as rare as hens teeth?
Not saying that a small primer wont set of any 10mm charge just fine, just like 45 but it sure is aggravating trying to jam that large primer in that little hole, and now I have to check the 10s like I do 45? PLEASE!!

I bought a box of 10mm CCI Blazer just to use for sight in and kept the brass for reloading. Didn't notice they used small primers until I went to reload some, I have plenty of 10mm Starline brass so I gave the Blazer brass to a buddy. He has reloaded them a couple of times without any problems.

Eliminating the LP primer, except for possibly the large magnum revolver cartridges, seems to be the wave of the future.

I fully expect to see nothing but small primer brass in the future. It just makes sense from a logistics standpoint. The downside for us reloaders is having to cull larger primer from small primer brass.

Nothing worse than that unpleasant clunk when that small primer hole just won't the large primer in. It is even worse during the primer crunch - each one is extremely valuable and to smash one is awful!

It's aggravating for sure. I noticed (after buying some) that even Lapua is putting small rifle primers in their 6.5 Creedmoor brass. Even a small rifle primer will set off 40 grains of powder without loss of accuracy or dependability. I see no reason why a small primer couldn't ignite a 44 magnum round with 18 grains of powder just fine. Definitely think it's a trend.

Lead Free primers ... they only came / come in small pistol .
Ammo loaded with "low lead" for indoor range use in mind and for anyone who wanted less lead , the ammo companies tested the small primers and in most handgun ammo they were acceptable ... so they used the small pistol in several calibers ... 45 acp were the first empties I noticed the change ... Now you had better look at them all .
Keep the small pistol primered brass ...with the sketchy primer supply you may want them when/if your Large pistol primers get hard to find but you have some small primers ... just dig out those cases !

Oh yeah, I've collected a gallon freezer bag worth of sp 45acp brass. It's just a PITA sorting is all unless I'm the shooter and know what I shot.
Personally I happen to have way more LPPs than small ones. I could probably go on at my current firing schedule, which is pretty heavy, for 5 or 6 years on my Lp supply, about 6 months on the small primers. No bueno.

At very high pressure, the 10mm large primer pocket is too close to the extractor groove. Same thing with 25acp, 30 carbine, and FN 5.7×28mm.

Next up: .45 Colt...???

I've already encountered one .45 Colt with SPP.

I guess I should have kept it. Just to see what was underneath I reamed it to accept LPP. The primer pocket looked fine after reaming. I seated a primer, but couldn't make myself load and use it.

I was under the false impression ammo mnfrs had standards to abide. No primer standards under SAAMI?

I get it from a manufacturers perspective. Having one size primer for everything has to streamline the process in the long run. The small makes sense because you likely wouldn’t get a large one in the smaller cases.

I do see the frustration for reloaders but eventually once everything has the small primers then it will just be the norm. Heck, I’d love to just have to buy small primers and be able to load all of my handgun calibers with them.

Well if they're gonna switch I hope I find more than the 4 cases I currently have. Not sure how long those 4 cases will last me. I havent run across any more and I dont buy loaded ammo any longer.

If I'm remembering correctly, since the beginning, some 10mm ammo have used LPP and some have used SPP. The reason why has never been fully explained but it's been a thing since very early on.
