In another topic (Zoo guns, in The Lounge), someone posted a photo of famed wild animal catcher Frank Buck. He is wearing what is clearly a S&W with gold or silver monogrammed service grips. Barrel length is about five inches, judging from the holster. Can't tell if there's a lanyard ring.

Does anyone know which gun(s) Buck carried? I've read a couple of his books and don't recall if he mentioned caliber, etc. My guess is that the gun in the photo is a .38-44 HD or M-1917 (commercial). Might be an M&P. I'm guessing that .44 Special ammo might be hard to find in some of the places he went. And metal jacketed ammo might give better penetration in animals, in case he had to shoot one.
I'm sure that dangerous natives might also be a factor in his wearing a revolver.

Frank Buck's gun

I believe that Frank Buck received one of the very few Registered Magnums completed during WWII. Roy could probably supply more information.

I posted the photos in the "Zoo Guns" thread.

The photos were of a life-sized cutout of Frank Buck at the Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville. Memory says they had a knife in a display case, though I don't remember if it was the knife in the photo. No S&W on display.

There was no info as to the date the photo of Buck was taken. As well-known as he was, I figured he probably owned a RM. His book "Bring 'Em Back Alive" was published in 1930, so he would not have had a RM for the adventures reported in that book.

My grandsons & I enjoyed the zoo visit and train ride, and it is high on their list for their next visit.

Frank Buck's revolver

Correction. I misspoke. The revolver that went to Frank Buck that I am aware of was a non-Registered Magnum assembled during World
War II. S&W was through with the registration process by then.

John-

Thanks. No hope of your knowing the barrel length, I suppose? Does Roy Jinks read this board?
