I recently was given a set of diamond targets that I put on my 1948 K22. As I looked at them, I noticed that the dish on the left side grip was noticeably smaller that another set of like grips. Both are k frame diamonds. Would one of these be a different vintage that the other ? Tom

The smaller would be the earlier one, and wasn't made over too long a period. The larger football one was made for quite a long time, then the Speed Loader relief one was made.

Thanks, I had never noticed the difference before. I just like the way they look on my old K22. I knew someone on here would know just about anything I asked. Tom

Tom generally the larger relief cut diamonds are later than the smaller relief but the size of the football relief cut can be deceiving and varied so I would not use it as an accurate age gauge.

I generally divide K diamond targets into 4 categories not including K Cokes.
1, Early non relieved 1950 to 1955 , 2, small relief cut sharp checkering turn 1955 to 1961, 3, small relief rounded checkering turn 1961 to 1965, 4, larger football relief in walnut or GA 1965 to 1967,
If you compare the two below you will see the checkering pattern is slightly different where it changes direction at the heel (bottom right),
The earlier style (Left) has a sudden straight upturn where the later style has a more rounded turn upwards.

Although the pair on the left has a slightly larger relief cut the pair on the right with the smaller football cut should actually be newer than the ones on the left.

Forgot to mention target grips would not have been an option when your K22 was made in 1948 ,
IIRC non relieved Targets first appeared in the 1950 All Model circular .

I knew they were not correct for it, but I just liked them. I stuck the original ones in the back of the safe.
The set I just got are identical to the ones you pictured on the right. I had never noticed the difference in the checkering design before either. These have the same rounded corners as the ones you show and the relief cut might be just a touch smaller than yours. Did they ever make a target grip without the cutouts ?
You have educated me on these grips, and from now on I will pay attention to them.
Thanks, Tom

Yes. They made unrelieved target grips until at least 1953. I have a set on a 11-1953 shipped N.I.B. Combat Masterpiece. Big Larry

I'd love to find a set of the unrelieved ones, but if I did I probably couldn't afford them. I've never seen a set that I recall. The man that gave them to me was a very old friend. About 40 years ago I sold him a k22, and have tried to buy it back for the last 30. I think he felt bad about keeping my revolver. He still has it.

The non relieved K targets pop up for sale occasionally and basically look like this,

Grips without checkering are called "Presentation" style ,
Member "Kurac" makes new reproduction presentations without the football relief I believe in K frame size in the for sale forum,

Of course I greedily have two spare mint sets. Never know when they will come in handy. Big Larry

Just realize that the target stocks that are mentioned in the flyer are very rare and contain a black plastic insert. The wood does not completly wrap around the front grip strap.

Would you please post a pic of your gun? I just acquired a minty 1952 vintage CM and would like to try and find an original box for it. I'm out of town right now but will post some pics of my birthday gun soon. Thanks!

Ken

It was shipped in a gold K38 box with an over label like most I have seen. The black markings indicated the serial number as well as the target hammer and target stocks. This revolver remains unfired. Big Larry

Good eye catching that little jem from the 1950 AMC ha ha...
The pics are from Lees album in the public folders section but that reference to the "Built in adapter" does suggest the rare early type below:

The Same illustration was used in the 1951 AMC and when compared to the earlier 1950 AMC in the previous thread they deleted the "built in adapter" notation which supports that theory:

Thanks Big Larry! At least I know what I'm looking for. The good news is, I've already got the SAT. 😉

You guys are really hurting my feelings. I am once again a rank and file beginner among pros. Those are some of the most beautiful and rare Smiths I have ever seen.
