Having started in LE, in the early 70's, in a small to medium size PD, the six-shot .38 Service Revolver was the standard issue. Specifically, the 'legendary' Model 10 in blue steel and a 4-inch "standard" barrel. This particular PD Service Revolver had been our standard issue since the Model 10 became the Model 10! Prior to 1957 our Department issued the pre-Model 10 in the same configuration. We were a Smith & Wesson PD for sure and at the same time, during that time period, an officer could carry the equivilent Colt .38 Service Revolver in the form of a Police Positive Special or my favorite, the Official Police. Our PD, in those times, tended to mirror what the NYPD was using/doing/saying. The greatest compliment one PD can do for another, mimick their ways/habits.
Since the Smith & Wesson Model 10 and pre-10 were the major and only players here, save for a few Colt .38 owners, I was wondering what the ratio of S&W to Colt to Dan Wesson duty six-gun preferences were to each other? How many Model 10's versus Colt .38's on "Gun Day" at the NYPD Equipment Bureau. Later, after Colt gave up the .38 market, the Ruger Police Service-Six .38 would burst upon the scene. How was the ration of S&W to Ruger owners? Thanks in advance my friends!

P.S. The Model 10 was the "undisputed" Heavyweight Champ in LE service revolvers in this country for many years. The NYPD played a 'huge' role in making this great six-gun even more popular. But it (M-10) was so good it stood alone, or at least thats my take on this 'legendary' .38 Special Service Revolver, the cop's .38!
