The SCSW says the 58 started around S256500. I have S256661 and have found the SN on the grip frame and on the cylinder under the ejector star. Where else should I find it? Do any of you have an earlier SN than mine, or even earlier than S256500?

S256589 is the lowest serial number for a Model 58 I have in my records. It was shipped in September 1964. In his book on the History of Smith & Wesson (pp. 222-223) Roy Jinks states the first test revolver in .41 Magnum was built on the frame of a .38/44 Heavy Duty and has serial number S225875. The first production run of this model was serial numbered S256500 to S258499.

I bought a set of N-frame PC diamond Magna grips via online auction which were in a Pachmayr grip box.
Serial# 256513 stamped inside the right grip.
In the box is a handwritten note--"Smith & Wesson M58 41 Mag."
My assumption is the owner replaced the grips with Pachmayrs and put the originals in the Pachmayr box. Common occurrence.

My gun letters with a ship date of September 22, 1964. Part an order for 200 57s and 58s going to the Amarillo Police Department.

Very interesting Shark Bait. My dad was good friends with several people on the APD and bought a Model 58 from the department when they stopped using the .41s in the early 60's. He died last month and we are in the process of getting a valuation of this incredible sidearm. From NM too by the way.

Sorry for the loss of your dad.
FYI.....APD started issuing the .41 in 1964. I was issued mine in 1975 and still using it in the mid '80's. And I'm from NM also.
