I bought MOD 27-2 5" BLUE in 1978 for $375.
just bought another for my 2nd son this year for $1,150.00
and grips are not as good.
In ECONOMICS 101 that is called INFLATION !

Out of curiosity, I checked an inflation calculator - from 1978 to 2021 that $375 is today's equivalent of $1536. Given your purchase price of $1150, it seems that S&W has done fairly well at holding the line on inflationary cost increases.

I bought this 6" 27-2 from a dealer in 1975 for $300. It was brand new and still sealed in the shipping carton. I really wanted a 5" (same list price), but the dealer didn't have one.

You could forget about MSRP back then on premium S&W's. My 27-2 had an MSRP of just under $200, but I was glad just to find one and pay 50% over. 29-2 were even worse. They had a MSRP of about $250, but you were lucky to only wait a year and pay over $500. By 1980, MSRP on a 27-2 was around $350.

Hey, every day is like Christmas for me around here. Guess i'll wind up like my 92 year old uncle. After he passed, i had to inventory his house. Every where i looked was a S&W or an envelope full of money.

I still have a 6" Model 27-2 I bought new in 1975, in presentation box, I think. I'm pretty sure it was around $250- $275 out the door. I don't recall 27s being particularly hard to find at that time.

That's what i was thinking, around $275. Seems everyone was wanting 44 mag "Dirty Harry" guns. They were fetching $500+ then. I just wanted a big S&W.

The 1979 Shooter's Bible #70 shows a list price of $310, with the 8 3/8" model at $319.50. Blue or nickle was the same price.

Without the presentation box the price was about $30 less.

If you forgot about that one (hard to believe) keep looken you might find more......................................M*

My filing cabinets are more likely to contain old papers and dead bugs than exotic guns too. There is a disassembled High Standard HD Military down there somewhere, though. It came back in pieces from the rebluer and I set it aside... stop me if you’ve heard this kind of story before.

I bought my very first NEW firearm in 1978. It is the 6" Nickel Model 27 on the top right of this group photo

As I recall it was $275 plus tax. The shop threw in a box of ammunition and a one month membership to their range

That revolver still sits in it's presentation case (which needs a new interior) and will not be sold while I draw breath

The serial number is N464xxx

If you forgot having a gun like that, think of all the other good thing things you may have forgotten. Wow!

First thing I would do if I were you, would be to toss the whole house and see what else you "forgot".......
