Polishing stainless

Hi Merry Christmas i polished my 624 Lew Horton Special last night using Mother's Mag Polish worked on it for an hour.

Almost turns it into a mirror LOL!. I'm pretty happy with the results Flizts probly a better product but can't find it around here i used Brasso on other stainless products like my box rails in the bed of my 58 GMC and it makes them look like a hard chrome finish but i haven't tried it yet on a stainless steel gun.I may one day try it on my 686. It doesn't hurt brass puts a nice shine finish on it and easy to work with....

Cheers

Rick

I use Mother's Mag Polish on stainless guns. It works a little faster than Flitz. I don't have a photo of a S&W available, but these are the last 2 guns I've gone over with Mother's Mag. It took about 15 minutes max, per gun, to shine them up.

Got a couple 686s I would like to clean up. Have been reading about the Mothers Mag Polish & decided to go over to eBay & see if containers were listed. I found several ads for "MOTHERS MAG MAGNESIUM & ALUMINUM METAL POLISH". Information in the ads don't refer to Stainless Steel. Is this what you all are referring to ? When the weapon is fired after polishing with Mothers does it dull the shine or blacken it up so that it must be polished all over again ? My 686s are to shoot and not to simply "view" as any type of collectors items. I carry my 686 snubby quite frequently. Suggestions please. Thanks
Carl

I use Flitz for when I want no cut . You will wear yourself out trying to remove the material needed to polish from brushed to chromelike . Use Mothers mag for that . Flitz is for delicate work , from old guitars to my Rolex . The way it takes rust from an old gun show find without hurting the FACTORY blue must be seen to be believed . Flitz is sold on ebay at far below what i find it for , when i can find it .

The "Magnesium and Aluminum" polish is what I've used on my competition 686--like yours it's a working gun not a collector's item (well, if you call competition "working") . After polishing, it stays shiny, except for the cylinder face, and only requires a quick wipe-down with a rag. Here's my 24-year-old 686 (with about 12,000 ronds through it) after probably three hours of polishing with Mother's and an old T-shirt--it was much easier than expected.

I have used both the Flitz and Mothers on Stainless but have only used Flitz on Blued and with caution. I have a friend who purchased a new GP100 when they came about and polished it with Flitz after every cleaning and it shined. It eventualy was a Very highly polished THINLY blued Ruger, It took most of the blueing(controlled rust) off after about 2yrs. Did I mention it was SHINEY!

Mothers I would not use on Blued as I have no knowledge of the effect however it works very well on Stainless with an old tube sock I might add.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

Mother's Mag Polish can be purchased at Wal Mart in the Automotive Section. It was originally made for shining up mag wheels. I would NOT recommend Mother's Mag for blued surfaces....it is too abrasive. Use Flitz for blued guns and use it sparingly and lightly.....go SLOW or you will take off the bluing.

I have a Baldor buffer with a variety of polishing wheels. Is there any reason it could not be used with Mother's Mag to speed up the polishing of a SS handgun?

What is your procedure for polishing the front of the cylinder?

I've found for polishing the front of the cylinder that Nev-R-Dull works best with no erotion of the metal, This would be for stainless only, There's also Lead Away cloth that I,ve heard work great as well..The Lead cloth may erode the metal some the Never Dull is a wadding soked in like a Kero based substance.. AutoZone also has the Nev-R-Dull..

I have been using mothers mag for about 2 years now i love it.Now for the face of the cylinder i use Hoppes#9 and a hard bristle toothbrush. When i have a semi-auto that is scuffed and the bead blasting is worn down i use 800 grit sand paper then move on to 1000 grit, then to mothers mag wheel cleaner and a dremmel tool with some polishing wheels to make it a mirror finish,it's not hard just long and drawn out.

We do have a Wally World here and there is an auto dept in there. when polishing are you apt to remove away any of the S&W wording or symbol ? How does the Mothers Mag actually effect the Stainless ? I dont have any Blued weapons all stainless. Three 686s, one 649, & a 638 with the aluminum alloy look. Thanks

If it's a newer S&W revolver thats not roll stamped into the metal you could polish off the wording or symbols. Mine are all rolled stamped into the metal so no problem on the ones I did. Mothers doesn't hurt the satinless steel it just makes really shiny and I put a coat of Renassiance Wax (you can use Johnson floor wax) on the gun when I'm finished polishing to seal the finish.
