I know this is a S&W forum, but any opinions out there about the merits of the Colt Magnum Carry?

It's a DS-II with .357 capability. If you like the DS, and .38+P isn't stout enough for you, then the MC is your gun.

Thats a good price in my book if its not all nicked up, does it come with box and papers then you got yourself a great deal

On a side note, what is equal to a smith brand---19,66 but isnt this a larger frame?

The Colt "D" frames like the Detective Special and Diamondback, and the Colt "SF" frames like the DS-II and Magnum Carry are equivalent to the S&W "K" frames like the Models 19 and 66.

The frames are very close, and the cylinders are almost exactly the same diameter.

Actually I stumbled upon it while hoping to find a S&W 66. I don't have a K frame so it's hard for me to compare. I think the Colt is smaller and lighter than the 66. My guess is that it's closer in weight to a 640, but the cylinder is slightly bigger to accommodate the 6 rounds. It comes with the box and papers. I wasn't going to buy it for $650, but I couldn't pass at $550. Pictures will follow later tonight.

Don't know that I am familiar with that one, anyone got a picture?

Think late model Detective Special (heavy barrel, ramp front sight, shrouded ejector rod) in stainless with rubber grips. I think (not 100% sure) the D frame Colt is bigger than a J and smaller than the K; the I frame Colt (e.g., Official Police) is slightly bigger than a K frame S & W.

A couple of issues you may want to be aware of: many of the Colt DA revolvers of that era have VERY sharpe trigger edges, so much so that they are frequently rounded off by owners or gunsmiths. A few double action trigger pulls in sequence will be uncomfortable. Also, the top surface area of the front sight will be probably be smooth and slick, glare is a problem. To me, their collector value exceeds their user value. That is a good price on the one you mentioned, but no way it is as functional as a K frame snub nose, IMO.

Okay here are some pictures. Pimple or not it's a nice revolver. I personally prefer the S&W trigger, but the Colt is smooth. The gun is in much better condition than my previous description may have indicated. It's been shot, but not much. 27 rounds according to the original owner. I agree with a prior comment about the K Frame snub being more gun, but this Colt is really more akin to a six shot metal J Frame.

Nice gun! I have a Colt or two, they are fine weapons.

If you look at the latest issue of American Handgunner, a Colt executive is quoted as saying they are looking to make DA revolvers again - a reintroduction of a previous model or an entirely new gun is on the table. I really like Smiths, but would definitely consider a "pimple purchase" if the new gun looks good :)

Nice revolver, but it is a bear to shoot with magnum rounds.

I suspect it's comparable to a S&W 60 snub. In fact I've discovered the Colt is listed at 21 ounces and the snub 60 is listed at 22.6 ounces. So its slightly lighter than the S&W, but has an extra round in the chamber.

The Magnum Carry is the same size as the last Detective Special; at least, they both fit the tightly boned holsters I have for my D.S. The internals are way different, though; the M.C is "modernized" like the Lawman Mk. III, to minimize the need for extensive hand fitting.

Ditto on the trigger's sharp edges. I had my gunsmith smooth them off while he had my gun to serrate the rear face of the ramp front sight blade to break up the glare.

Pachmayr made "Presentation" grips that cover the backstrap and have a gold Colt medallion in them. Like most Pachmayr grips, they are just a bit bigger than the wood ones they factory used but make the gun a lot more pleasant to shoot.

Colt has discontinued more good guns than most makers have ever built.

The grips in the picture aren't original. The original grips are some ugly rubber finger grip Hogue's. Buff, what grips to you have on yours? Any pictures?

I can't take and post pictures, I am too unmotivated or technologically impaired or lazy or stupid or something. It is always something I am going to learn 'tomorrow.'

I have the Pachmayr CD-C Compact grips as seen here:

http://www.pachmayr.com/revolver-grip-details.php

Put in ''Colt" in the -Select- box and click on Detective Special in the right hand box.

They used to be available with the Colt medallion on each side.

I have a few Colts, just because they are just a wee bit bigger than a J frame but are six shot. However, Colts go out of time if you shoot them a lot. Twenty years ago, that was not a big deal as there were a lot of gunsmiths that could do that work...since Colt walked away from the wheelgun market, those gunsmiths are drying up.
