Check your serial number again and be sure also that it's a no-dash. Can't find it in SCSW3.

Probably 1986 or 87, only the factory can tell you for sure. Give them a call at 800-331-0852, hit #7 and ask one of the customer service reps to help you. They will generally provide the month and year if you provide the serial number.

All it says is MOD 586 AUD 5995
Interpolating somewhat with the serial numbers in the book, I would say 1987.

if its a '86 or 87 would it still need the modification?

The 586-1 started in 1986. The "M" modification was implemented in 1987 for the 586 and 586-1. Yours may be one of the late 586 no dash's going by the serial numbers in SCSW3.

The 586's were square butts. Here's what you should see on yours if it's a no dash. If its a dash-1 (or anything) there'll be a dash and the number after the model number.
The "M" stamp is clearly visible if the mod has been preformed. Hope this helps.

If it works with magnum rounds, it doesn't need the modification. There were only a few that required it; they would bind shooting magnum ammo. Last I heard, S&W is not doing "blanket" modifications on these - only on a case-by-case basis for ones with problems. The production date on yours (1987 I think, and as others have stated) I think takes it well out of the problem range.

Give us the serial number from the butt, not the yoke, then we can give you a DOB.
The Serial number of my no dash 586 is AVB11XX. I thought it was AUB until I checked closer. You can't get a DOB on a Smith unless you check the bottom of the butt.

Sorry, I transposed my numbers: it's ABV11XX, not AVB-- I almost did it again this time 'round. Must be a mental block. AVB would be 1987, and the no dash 586s stopped in 1986. Anyway, mine's a no dash as well. It's never been modified.
In the SCSW, SN# AHC1687 is dated Jan 1986, so, since yours is AUD, but still a no-dash, I'd assume it was built sometime in 1986, just prior to the 586-1, which also came out in '86.
This book is hard to use - someone else needs to try to date your gun. My head hurts.
