A neighbor offered to sell his mod 64 for $340. Is that unreasonably high? I haven't checked it out yet.

Is the 64 identical to the model 10 other than the finish?

That price is about $100.00 high for my area I got one last year for just over $230.00 in very good condition .
Yes it's the same as a model 10 but stainless.

What barrel length? What engineering revision (the dash number after the model number on the yoke).

I've got a short track focused on the 64-2 snubby, not enough to discern a trend.

Here's the track:

Smith & Wesson 64-2 2 in Pinned Barrel. Revolver in .38 Special, Plus P. Bluebook of Gun Values (32nd Edition) indicates between $275 in 95% condition and $515 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 24 recorded prices for this model gun from $310 to $549 over a period of 2 Yrs 7 Mos ending November 13, 2011. The average price as of that date was $409. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $511.

I paid $450 for a no dash snubby Model 64 so I think the price is pretty good on the one your neighbor has especially if it's a snubby.

I bought a Model 64-5 with Pachmyar grips from a retired metro police department armorer a couple of years ago and sold it on GunBroker last summer. I had a $1.00 minimum bid and a $350 "Buy Now" set; the first bidder hit the "Buy Now" button.

Price is suject to condition and packaging. Just bought one online for $250. A 4" Heavy Barrel, no dash, no lock, aftermarket grips. Haven't seen it in person yet, we'll see if it was a deal.

I knew that J&G sales had these on their website, so I looked at their prices. Police weapons, bobbed hammers for around $270. Add shipping and transfer fee and it's close. I hope the hammer's not bobbed, I like to shoot single action. Barrel length is unknown; my wife is the one he spoke to.

You will need to read the ad's closely from Bud's and J&G sales as a lot of the police trade Model 64's were double action only with bobbed hammers.

I believe it is high, but probably not unreasonable.

Prices for Model 64's tend to be all over the map depending on barrel length (2", 3" or 4") and condition.

Assuming it is a 4" inch barrel, no internal lock, 95% condition and is NOT an L.E. trade-in, I think that $300 would be a more fair price.

It is going to depend on what the gun is. The $340 price is a steal on a 2" or 3" gun in reasonable condition.
It is not bad on a very clean 64 that was never a Police or Guard gun.

I just bought a 4" HB 64-1 in almost new condition for $400. That is a premium price for a 64 in a 4" HB, but I was wanting a very clean gun, and I got one.

barrel type will also impact price/value. the early taperd or pencil barrels will be more desirable than the more common heavy or bull barrels.

Unless it's LNIB $340 sounds a little high for a 4" heavy barrel, if it's a 2", 3" or 4" standard barrel Model 64 then $340 is a reasonably good deal...

I have been looking to trade a .40 cal Beretta PX4 Storm (full size) for something and was offered a S&W Model 64 in trade. I'm interested in a revolver but don't have near the feel for values of revolvers in general and this model 64 in particular.

My Storm was bought new in December 2012, has 500 +/- rounds through it. Comes with everything that came brand new and is in great condition.

If my pics come through, would I be getting a fair trade?

Thanks in advance.

If the condition of the gun is good (and it is not a pd trade in) the price sounds good. If I did not already have a 38 snubnose revolver I'd go for it. I suspect that being SS it will hold it's value better than a model 10. I doubt that they will ever be collectible unless it is the most desirable dash number, mint, w/box & all the paperwork. JMHO

Bottom line is that I don't think you could go wrong with at that price.

I hope this helps.

I bought mine (-5) at a lgs in October of 2013 for 476.00 + taxes and fees. It is a 3" barrel which is a premium It is excellent condition. I'd rate it at 95%. No box or papers.

At the time the shop was having a -20% sale on used handguns.

I remember complaining about the price after a number of our brethren chimed in with their stories of better deals. It wasn't long before I realized I had a good/fair deal. :)

I am pretty sure these are the correct pictures.

Model 64

I grabbed a model 64 From Alex in WI from the forum here , the gun was like new in the box, I will never look back on this buy as it is a great revolver and my new carry piece. Everything about this is perfect, For $340.00 I would snap it up in a second.

Good Luck Pete
