Just placed an order for a Model 64 4" revolver in NY-1 finish.

From the pics, it looks to be a square butt version, and was $389.

I remember these being much less expensive (like over $100 cheaper), but I just never got around to ordering one. Not crazy about paying the higher price, but I have a feeling that these aren't going to get any cheaper. Lesson learned.

Here's a link to the site where I found it.

Smith & Wesson 64 Revolver, 38 Special, 4" Barrel, NY1 Finish, DAO & Bobbed, VG+ Condition, Used, S&W.

Got mine a few years back from J&G.
About $260 or so, IIRC.
Maybe yours will be nicer.
Finish was very worn and the action was "short stroking" (whatever that is).
Sent it to S&W for the "Combat Revolver" job.
OK except they didn't re-stamp the SN on the side of the frame.

TAROMAN, Nice gun. Did S&W do that bead blast looking finish on it when you sent it to them? Do they normally stamp the serial # on the side when you get a trigger job? Please elaborate. Thanks

Yes, S&W renewed the blasted finish.
A unique feature of the NY-1s was the S/N stamping on the left side of the frame. A NYPD requirement, I presume.
My later 696-1 is also stamped there, though not a police gun.

The laser etched serial numbers on the left frame were placed so the information was visible, even with stocks that covered the bottom of the grip frame (a window was cut into rubber stocks for the same reason) and without opening the cylinder. Don't know why they did it on non-NYPD guns too. The etched SN was not very deep and easily removed (intentionally or otherwise) and went away after a brief time.

I was in J&G yesterday, rode the FLH over the mountain from Jerome. Little chilly, awesome ride, but I digress.
J&G has piles of these 64's. I also bought one couple years ago for $260. J&G, IMO, like every other dealer, is milking the current market to the limit. That's our system. They've got a ton of very high-priced handguns and apparently sell them like hotcakes. Just not to me….
I walked out empty handed and enjoyed some good Thai food in Prescott and another awesome HD ride back over the mountain.
My NYPD revolver had UGLY carved up Pachmeyer's on it but shoots great and .38 is about as cheap ammo as you can get. I wish they had piles of 65's…. Enjoy your revolver!

I love my 4" NY-1,It is my Bed side Gun.With a spring change and some trigger work the DA pull is amazing.I would happily pay $400 for one if I did not already have one,Great Guns. And what kind of Gun are you going to walk into a LGS or Gander Mountain/Cabela's and buy for $400??

I've bought several of the 64's from J&G, they offered them in Very Good Condition for $269 or $249 for standard condition a few years back, and I couldn't resist. I also wear a 64 at work, and the triggers on all of them are excellent. My 686+ is still my favorite Smith, but the other three are right on its heels!

Lowercase,
Did you receive your J&G 64 yet? If so, how is the condition? I have a few NY-1 64's and a 60, but I am always looking for more. The deal sounds good if I can find a 4" square butt OR 3" round butt; please let us know how it worked out.

If J&G has 3" round-butt 64's or 65's for sale, then my budget is in serious trouble. I just had to have a 3" 64, so I bought a 4" gun and a 3" barrel and had it put together myself. It doubled the cost of the gun, but it's exactly what I wanted.

There is NO WAY I would spend that kind of money on a 25 year old DAO police trade-in. When we went to the semi auto in 1993, guys were selling their 64 NY-1's for 50 bucks. I know times have changed, but that revolver is not worth more than $250.

What the market consistently bears now says otherwise. If you know the times have changed, you know that $250 doesn't get you much anymore, certainly not a pre-lock, pre-MIM NY-1 Model 64 in NRA "good" or better condition.

Doubtless someone will come along to declare their "minty" 64 with box, tools and docs just bought for $5 ;) -- someone always does -- but we are rapidly approaching a market where $250 is bottom barrel beater territory.

When my department switched from 681's to Beretta 9mm's, they offered our old guns to us for $100 each. That was about the same time, early 90's. Have you seen what those guns are bringing NOW?

$250 for ANY Model 64 in decent shape is a screaming bargain these days.

I think it was "Jerry's Sports Center" or somesuch that was selling these NY-1's for $169 each ($159 per/3) back around '89. Slow movers, took me awhile to sell the other 2 @ $225. Joe

If it was not DAO I would be more likely to agree. But a DAO gun is not for me. I love a k frame but sold my 64 NY-1 for 125 bucks back in 95. Fair price then and fair price now

Credit for acknowledging you base your assessment on personal preference and not what's actually happening in the market place.

And I've got a box of money for any and all quality 64s you'd sell for $125. ;)

Wouldn't sell it for 125 now. But 300 for a DAO pd trade-in is more then fair. With shipping and Ffl transfer you're over 400 bucks. That is insane. And te reason the market is crazy is because panic buyers are paying.

Anybody wanna buy my 1992 Panasonic TV? Only 700 bucks. It's a classic !

But you said it was a fair price now. :D

There've been many good threads of late discussing prices so I won't rehash but to say that although the panic this time last year was certainly driving prices of some items up, the panic's over.

Prices were going up long before it and have continued to after it. Lots of reasons, chief of which is that there's continuing demand for a good that is diminishing permanently.

The economic implications of that are simple.
