I have one and am considering it for carry, but am wondering what commercial ammo to carry in it. I don't want to carry my handloads for potential legal reasons.
So what commercial ammo is available that would be suitable for defensive purposes (not cowboy action shooting).
Thanks.

I carried my 625 Mountain Gun for several years, for work, until it was recently removed from our approved list. We were issued the Speer Golddot in 250 gr JHP. It's good ammo with a deep and wide hollow point bullet. I think they were going around 920 FPS out of my MG, if I remember correct. Prior to the Golddots we were issued the Winchester Silvertips with a 225 gr JHP. They were typical Silvertips in appearance. I never chronographed any of the Silvertips so can't say what the velocity was out of the MG. The Golddots felt like they were hotter though, when fired in the 625. I'd think either would work well for defensive carry around town.

mountain gun

I have one, and load a 250 grain cast bullet around 900 fps. the legal matters don't matter if it is a good shooting. I am sure some of the major ammo companys offer something.

If you are looking for a real in-town screamer, the Cor-Bon 165 gr JHP, might be be a good choice. I also like the Federal 225 gr LSWCHP, American Eagle 225 gr JSP and the Remington 225 gr LSWC as general purpose loads. Out in the boonies, the Buffalo Bore 255 gr LSWC hardcast can't be beat.

As Ronnie said, a good shoot is a good shoot, irrespective of the ammo used.

I have heard of an agency in SoCal which had a few hard guys carrying 45LC revolvers and had some good performance in shootings with what I recall to be the SilverTips. If anyone can get member "Nyeti" to throw in his input here, he would know.

my 625 mountain gun in 45colt or my vaquero sheriff is my edc in a simply rugged sd pancake. i carry my own loads 255 gr swc at about 800fps. i used to worry about it but you know what, it is the ammo i shoot the most and practice with i know exactly what it does so to me that makes the most sense . and i know it kills deer so id guess it would work on 2 legged things as well just my 2 cents

A lot of folks carried revolvers in 45 Colt before the start of this passing fad of bottom feeders. ;)

Some folks still carry 45 LC wheelguns and I'd guess whichever current factory hollow point load shoots to point of aim for you would work if needed.

FWIW, given the ability of a good trial lawyer to make your life miserable, and how many potential jurors have been brainwashed with incorrect info about guns, I'd rather just buy factory ammo for self defense. Cheap insurance and peace of mind. I hope none of us have to go through that mess, but violent felons are what they are.

FWIW, while that used to be much more of a consideration, now that we know more about use of force, specifically shootings, I would not worry too much about handloads if they perform well. Mas' work over many years contributed a lot to that education. Based on my experience as a trial lawyer and LE legal advisor, I came to realize that any attorney who fails to object to any effort to introduce such a tangential issue is likely committing malpractice. While admissibility is a discretionary decision on the part of the Court generally, this would be so far outside of the scope of the Evidence Rules (See ER401-403) that it should be abuse of discretion and thus reversible error on appeal if trial counsel makes a good record.

For a factory load I like the silver tips in mine, but for the most part I carry hand loads made up of whatever components I can get at the time.

I've just picked up some 270 grain LSWC from RimRock bullets. They are 15 BN rather than some of the real hard-cast bullets out there at 21+. I think 900-950 fps should be just about right. My 625 MG is fast becoming my favorite S&W. This is now my woods carry gun.

photos....

I bought a stainless MG that had had it's finish redone already from over cleaning. I had it customized to 3 inches. I carry the Cor-Bon 225 grain DPX's. They are screamers and test results show them opening to around one inch consistently in 4 ply gel tests.

You definitely need to post some photos of that one....I can't say that I have seen anyone bob a Mountain Gun barrel, but I am optimistically hopeful that it is awesome :D

I would imagine the barrel profile looks something like a 3.5" Model 27 (minus another 1/2 inch of course).

AFAIK, the DPX in any sufficient caliber (.38 Special or >) have passed the relevant testing and should work well. How do those shoot? Published load specs?

Seems like Barnes, Winchester and Buffalo Bore all offer defense loads in .45 Colt. I'm sure there are others but these are what I have been running into lately.

THE 625 MOUNTAIN GUN IN .45 COLT IS A BEAUTIFUL WEAPON, AS ARE ALL MGs, IMHO. I AGREE WITH thomasinaz REGARDING CHOICE OF BULLETS. EITHER OF THEM WILL GET THE JOB DONE ON TWO LEGGED PREDATORS. I CARRY MINE IN A SIMPLY RUGGED , SOURDOUGH, PANCAKE, CROSSDRAW……..

625 MG

Mr. Horvath did one for me. Cut to 3 inches, Da/Sa smooth as butter with a gold bead Call sight, stag handles with a Tyler T Grip. I carry Federal SWCHP in mine. Great gun, awesome gunsmith, and it shoots far better than I can shoot it.

Love mine!!! I had my cylinder sent to TK custom for a moon clip setup and now have the best of both worlds...45 Colt and 45 ACP....Shoots great. I carry mine in a aker leather model 137...

My first S&W was my 625-7 MG in .45 Colt given to me by my wife 9/02. I tried to wear it out until I traded for my second one - a -6 - which took up the real world/range duties of my nostalgic first S&W.

Biggest gripes: 1. The laser-etched barrel markings wear off quickly with cleaning. 2. The black on black sights are difficult for 'mature' eyes to pick up.
