Those 342's have a following......is it this black oxide finish, or the matte silver? Do you have the jewel case for it, or is it a later iteration with a blue box?

I have the first versions with the jewel box, and would not take 500 for a used one (they are keepers for sure)

You've run into a couple fans. (I may be a little extreme. :) ) I don't know if I'd take $1000 for mine. It's the best J-frame airweight, yes, I know, "Airlite", that S&W ever made.

Joel is correct, although we may be more than just fans, the titanium scandium guns are really just about perfect carry guns. ;)

Mine is the black oxide. Don't have any box or paperwork with it. Great pocket carry. Gave under $400 for it a couple of years ago. Don't think think the guy , or I for that matter, knew what he had at the time. It has been extremely reliable, and eats everything (just factory loads) I feed it.

Yup, they are a joy to carry. Are you planning to sell, or just updating your insurance paperwork?

It sounds like you got a pretty good deal when you bought it, you should be able to sell it for a bit of profit if you had a mind to........

I'm sure Green Top will offer you a whole $350 for it and put it in the case for $749.

I just bought one on GB for $600 a few days ago. I don't feel like I overspent but I just now looked at completed listings and they seem to be going for closer to $500. Heck, check out this one that sold 2 months ago for $505 with CT grips! Talk about a score! It was an actual auction (not Buy It Now) and I'm very surprised it didn't go for more. These guns aren't very well known, which I think is one of the main reasons why their values aren't higher. But then again, you can buy a new no-lock 340PD for about $800 so a used 342PD can only be worth so much.

The 342Ti (essentially the same gun but silver finish on the frame) seems to be selling for $350-450 which is amazing to me, since that's what used 442s and 642s go for. I anticipate these 342PDs to only increase in value as people figure out about them, buy them, realize how awesome they are and never sell them. lol

LOL! Yeah, I've bought from them (who in central VA hasn't?), mostly handloading supplies, but after they offered a friend of mine $500 for his M1A, I would never sell them a gun.

Yeah just updating paperwork. As I'm getting older I am also wanting to make sure that, in the event of my demise, my family knows how much everything is worth should they decide to sell any of it.

I have a 337 I paid less than 500.00 yrs ago all the new ti are 800.00 plus ive seen well used ones for over 500.00 one like new id start at 650.00 at a show and see what happens

I paid about $500 for mine over 10 years ago, 342 Ti in the case with the blue lining. It is my carry piece when I feel the need for one. I will not sell it for any reason. Perfect carry piece.

btw, the 342 is aluminum frame, titanium cylinder. They didn't start using scandium in the frame until the 340PD.

I have a 342, and a back up....you know cuz 1=0 and 2=1 when problems arise. Like other posters I have a hard time putting a value to them because it's less about money and more about practicality/features. The closest thing made today is a 340pd (which usually has a lock). Since I don't really plan to shoot 357 it's a wash (some would even say that due to cylinder gap a dedicated 38sp is better). With that in mind $800+ seems to be a fair value. Because for that level of $ you could find the best/most comparable currently available gun with a little leg work. As it is though mine a staying with me.

Someone above said "best pocket revolver ever" or something similar and I couldn't agree more. Welcome to the club, I'm glad to be a member

Well, I don't think I would trade my 342 for a new-in-the-box 340PD, but I may be misguided.

First and foremost, I think .357-caliber in these featherweight guns is more blow than go. It's an interesting engineering feat with substantial sales appeal, I imagine, but I would much prefer to have seen S&W devote their skill and resources to making a 9mm revolver of this type, with appropriate length frame and cylinder. (I realize this would have been a huge expense, and the resulting cost of the revolver likely would have been considerable.) So, given that tripling the price (or more) to come up with a true "942PD" probably would not have flown, then .38 Special makes the most sense, to me.

And then there is the rakish good looks that only the 342PD has, with its deeply-fluted cylinder, all black finish, and red ramp front sight. Pretty may not be the word, but it certainly is a handsome little fellow.

No, I think not even a couple hundred more than a NIB, no-lock 340PD would be enough to pry mine away from me. In fact, I'm sure of it. :)
