Update: Need info on 686 with slots for Millet scope rings
A 6" 686 (a -2 if I remember correctly) with slots for Millet scope mount rings was up for sale at a gun show. I have seen N frames with those slots, but never a 686. Would that 686 be part of a special run? Or maybe they were cut by a gunsmith??
Except for the slots, it looked like a standard full lug 686. There was no box so I couldn't get a product code to go by. I should have taken a pic but didn't have the foresight to do so.
The ring mounts looked like these on this 629 (not mine..wish it were).
thanks for any help

M-29 barrel
Have a M-29 brand new barrel 8 3/8 of the type your referring. The Leupold mound with dove tail rings I've been using works so well haven't put this S&W style together yet.

That's a new one on me too. I have a 629-3 with the broached barrel. I'll be interested to see what turns up.

I'll have to do some research on that one. Unfortunately i will not be able to attend that gun show today. It may have sold already...then again, maybe it hasn't. That dealer is a regular at gun shows. It might be at the next one.

I knew that the answer would turn up on this site.
686-3 with Millet rings.
It's 1 of 1100 made. Product code 104251. And now that i remember correctly, it had a Simmons scope mounted on it and the end of the scope didn't come close to the end of the barrel. It could have only been a 8 3/8" barrel. It has Combat stocks, which i didn't think were original to the gun. And more importantly, it has the scarce Millet scope mounts.
It's a shame that the box was tossed (or lost)

Barrell Replaced?
Do you think this gun is factory, or a barrel replacement?
Thanks!

Need to get this one lettered. It has the look of an uncatalogued factory gun.
(Unless that's not a 6-inch barrel. Could it be a 8 3/8-inch?).
Too bad you didn't get the rings. L-frame rings are hard to find, and the N-frame rings won't fit, too big.

I have an update on this particular 686-3...I met with the dealer at the gun show last weekend and bought it. Fortunately it does have the scarce original Millet rings, and the original Combat stocks (dated April 1? 1989). Sadly, no box. It was bought to shoot anyway. It came with a Simmons 1x20 scope.
The rings are obviously different from the currently available Millet rings, but nothing like the rings that have been posted in an older thread (see post #33)
Help! Integral Scope Mount Rings?
Anyways...if you have this particular model 686 and you're searching for the rings, the type on the right is what you need..

That's some good hunting! I'd forgotten the old post (there're so many) but reread it and all the info was right there! Congrats on your treasure hunt!! Show us some pics when you mount the scope.

Simmons mounted... too shiny for me. I'll order a scope with a matte finish.

That is sharp!! The Simmons is kinda on the shiny side but the rig looks good. Too bad those barrels were discontinued.

My experience with Simmons is they won't hold up to recoil of a 357 or 44 mag. Put a Leupold or Nikon on it.

The Simmons scopes that are still old enough to be made in Japan aren't half bad. In my view they're a step above the newer identical Chinese made scopes.

Thanks. I've never had a Simmons except for this one that came with the gun.... But I am a fan of Nikon products, and have several of their rifle scopes.
