forum,
I have a chance to buy a 586 2 1/2 inch pistol.Gun is a round butt. barrel stamped 38 special.Is this gun rare??and may i ask approximate value???
The 'book' says that the 38 special marked 586's were for export to Brazil. Being made in 2.5", 4.25", and 6" barrels.
The 2.5" barrel is product code 103497. And could have a CCE s/n prefix in a 586-4. Or a BPY s/n prefix in a 586-5.
I do not know the current value of these Brazilian exports.
ETA. Looks like 158 were only made in 38 special! Making it a rare bird.
I found this old thread that talks about them.
Here. S&W 586 in 38 special - info??
Product code in the other thread lists 106497 as the 2.5" one.
The product code I listed above came from the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 4th ed.
It's a highly desirable revolver being 586 and 2.5 inch barrel but being only 38 special definitely hurts it value quite a bit compared to its 357 marked dash 4 counterpart. Its still a 1500-1700 revolver in excellent condition. Just seen a 586-4 357 mag snub with amazing 300 plus combat grips sell for 2000. I also owned two like new in box 357 mag 586-4 2.5 inch guns and sold them 2 years or so back for 2500 each to give you idea. They were cool and unique guns but for that money rather have some performance center guns that run laps around them fyi...
The auction murphydog just linked to is your best predictor. If the gun you are chasing is still available, you should probably lock it down. Nowhere to go but up!
