2 inch s&w 64 opinions and local pricing

I bought a minty 64-4 2" with original walnut magnas, Tgrip, no box for $425 FTF locally (VA) yesterday. Appears UNFIRED unless you look into the chambers and can tell it's had at least 1 cylinder thru it.

I would have expected to pay closer to $500 or more but it was one of those instant "ill take it" buys on my part, since I've been in the market for one for quite some time.

The ad was only up for 4 minutes when I committed to buying. A rare deal indeed.
 
I used to have a 2" 64 with factory bobbed/DAO hammer. I can't remember the exact price I paid, but I want to say it was in the neighborhood of $400-450, but that was over 10 years ago. I think I'd be willing to go $500 for one in excellent shape now, maybe a little more if I can find one with a factory bobbed/DAO hammer (that's my preference for a carry gun).

I thought it was a great carry gun. I actually preferred it to the 3" 65 I had at the time. My favorite grips for it were a set of PGS Hideout grips.

Like with any used gun, make sure to give it a good inspection before buying.

Recently purchased.

I picked this one up several weeks ago. I was really searching for a very nice 66 pre-lock but was having no luck finding one. This 64-2 showed up at a local pawn shop, was very nice and showed virtually no wear, but didn't have the box or original grips. The grips wasn't a huge issue to me because I had the Hogue combat grips already to put on it. I've got a little over $500 in it, but I'm quite pleased.

I had a 2" 64 years ago. After carrying a J-frame 2" .38 Special for a long time, I found the 64 snub nose to be comparatively big, bulky, heavy, and not nearly as concealable as the smaller revolver. However, with my handgun skills lacking somewhat, I was able to shoot much better with the 64 than with the J-frame.

You are not alone there. I'd think most, if honest, would come to the same conclusions.

Yes to this exactly. Actually I traded a j-frame on my 64. The J-frame is a better carry revolver, but I didn't carry it, so I am happier shooting my 64.
 
a 64-2 2" is my main ccw. I wanted to start carrying a revolver when I switched to aiwb carry. I carried a j-frame for awhile, but switched to the k frame after I found a snub that I thought was a fair price ($500). Of course it is heavier, but I was surprised how quickly I got used to it.I just shoot it better than the j frame, and more fun as well. Very happy with mine!

The K frame snubs, including the 64 are much better shooters than the comparable J frames. The J frames are easier to carry. That is not to say the K frames are hard to carry. Unless you are ankle or pocket carrying, I see no reason to go to the smaller J frame. On a good belt, in a good holster I find little difference.

Only con I can think of is that I don't have one!

There was a nice one on here for sell not long ago. I looked at it everyday hoping someone would buy it before I caved.

Only reason I never bought it, was I wanted a 69 and had pre ordered a Python.

I sold my 2" 64 because at the time I didn't see the point of a 2" k framed 38 special. I thought a 38 special should be a a j and K should be a 357. I'm not as stuck on that thought now days and wouldn't mind having a 2" 64 again, but I doubt I'd carry it as much as a j or 357 k.

I picked up a 2” M64-2 from a member here a short while ago, love the gun and its often my carry gun

Yours is most likely a former Brink's gun. Those guns were barely shot and only carried by the vault staff not on the truck.

Bought one for my father to carry and I want it back. Best double action (they were DAO only) trigger on a S&W I've ever shot...
 
When I first switched from a j frame to a k frame, I noticed the extra weight. I would not have called it more uncomfortable, just I noticed the extra weight. I got used to it very quickly, and in a strange way I kinda like the extra heft. The biggest benefit is I shoot the k frame better. I have fun shooting it, never could really say that about my j frame.
