My custom 5" 686 dash4 is my favorite revolver.

It's a round butt

I have these old grip that came on a 586-2 I foolishly traded for a 629 years ago.

They seem to fit solidly and unless you look at the back, they look wonderful.

Maybe I'll try to get some wood and fill in the gap.

What do you guys think ?

Same gun with some Ahrends, which feel a bit too skinny for me.

Not much left to say. Get the right grips, and then buy a gun to fit your old grips:D

Not often do I disagree with Pete, but this will be one of them. Here are two round butted revolvers. One has a proper set of RB elk on it, the other has a modified set of SB elks on it. It just depends how I feel as to which one gets holster time.

Now, if you buy an “extra” set of stocks, then you must find a revolver to fit.

Sad story:
I bought a new round butt 629 circa 199x and didn't really care for the rubber grips that came with. Shortly thereafter, I found a like-new set of Square Butt Targets with beautiful grain at a gun store. I paid all of $7 for them.

When I put them on, I didn't like the gap. This was in my pre-forum days and my knowledge about all things S&W was very limited. I can't really remember, I think they were Footballs, but gee, for all I know they were Cokes! So I took the stocks back and got my precious $7 refund.

What would they be worth today? :(

I accidentally bought square butt grips for my 617, and I put them on, ran them, they were fine, just looked weird. Ended up buying some bantam grips for it, I like them better. Of course, my 617 is back at the mothership getting a new frame right now, so it doesn't matter at this time lol.

I say run it, unless it bothers you to look at it.

I love the classic look of these grips.

My very first handgun was a 686 square butt with grips like this.

this is a sentimental thing

The VZ's look too skinny, side to side, maybe even more so, than my Ahrends.

X-ray pic is cool. I can see it here.

I really like this idea, and might work on something similar..

That was my main complaint about Ahrends grips. Just not thick enough side to side for my hands. K-frame targets are about perfect for me. K-frame magnas with a T-grip are about right as well.

I bought a 19-4 a while back for about $400 that had seen some work. It had a target hammer installed and the original trigger was ground and polished smooth. The grip frame had been ground from SB to RB. Was wearing RB Pach's when I bought it. I got in touch with the Culinas and they had a set of RB to SB conversion stocks available which I bought. It has become my favorite revolver to take to the range.

I've used Altamont Round Butt to Square Butt Target Conversion grips on a variety of K and L frame revolvers. Maybe on an N frame too.

There are lots of round to square conversion grips. Hogue is another source. Putting the wrong grips on the gun is like buying size 12 shoes and stuffing them with newspaper when you’re feet are size 10. They’ll work, but no matter how you look at it, they’re wrong.

Get a set of round to square conversion stocks from Ted Adamovich at Blu Magnum and enjoy them. Top quality and value for the money! Had Ted make two sets of stocks for me about three years back, one round butt set for a 625-6 MG .45 Colt and a set of squares for my 24-3. Sized properly, I find the squares just feel much better to my hand although both sets are terrific.

I put the Ahrends back on for now.

I may try to carve out a piece of wood to better contour the factory grips another time

Trading a 586 for a 629 is never a bad idea lol
I am a big fan of hogue fingergrip hardwood stocks ,they are available in round butt to square butt conversion.
The G10 versions feel slippery to me but others seem
To like them
You just have to explore the options on your own , what works for one won’t necessarily work for another
Edit: sorry that wasn’t what you were asking was it ? haha
I say do whatever blows your hair back
It’s your gun ,who cares what the guy next to you thinks
