63 4 inch Kit Gun

Sheeeeee came in today! Signed papers and $25 transfer fee.

Ah... SN is M135### which makes it in 1980!!! Yes pinned barrel. The front sight has a black insert... not a red one. Strange.

Now about photos... first tomorrow I will shoot it then photo the gun and groups. I have the Pachmayr grips off and wood ones on. It is tight as can be and no doubt will last tons and tons of shooting.

Yea tomorrow I'll go out and do some practice with my CCW guns as well as the Kit gun.

Good for you for getting it. Try a bit of "goof off" or the like on the front site, may just have Magic Marker on it!

Oh no.. it is a real insert. I have a S&W 629-1 4 inch with a black insert front sight to!

Love mine with the targets also, just feels much better in the hand.

I think I bought Pachmyer 'compact' grips when I went elk hunting back in the early '80s. Dunno what happened to the wood ones (or the dang box!)

Congratulations on the new revolver

I too really like the Factory Target grips for the J-frames

My Model 63 was the property of a Factory employee. I can not recall how many decades ago I purchased it from him.

The Target Stocks that mine wears are actually Factory Defects that James pulled out of the trash.

James had the revolver polished while he still worked for the Company

Mine is an '82 no dash. It's not pinned but she sure shoots.

I love my J frames but have never shot a J with trigger action to match the Ks. (I don't shoot single action.)

The 4” model 63 is one of my favorite S&W’s! Mine has been used to kill rattlesnakes, groundhogs that were undermining the house foundations, fend off aggressive squirrels while deer hunting, and to make holes in reams of target paper.

When I bought a M631, I liked the combat stocks so much, I got a set for the M63 so I could get a good grip on the revolver, as opposed to the little magma stocks that came on it.

You got yours for a good price! Enjoy it!

Alright.... went a-shooting...

Did some shooting with my Glocks (center holes) and then the kit gun!

Top left is CCI mini-mags, 15 yards two handed firing single action. Top right is Remington Golden bullets done the same way.

THEN bench rest at 25. CCI's on left, Remington's on right (notice one hit the edge of the paper on the bottom.)

Not bad at all. Later I shot one handed at other targets and noticed I shot a bit high. Going to find a real good load and adjust the sights dead on at 20 yards!! And find me a S&W made holster, black, like I had in the '80s. I know it's a B21-64 holster (fits 34 kit gun.) Looks like the one shown here!

I had a Model 63 on my watch list for a long time and when prices on them started to exceed what you could buy a nice 5 screw K-22 for I pretty much gave up.

Then about 5 years ago I spied this one at a gun show for well below market value. No box or papers but that didn't matter and I didn't hesitate once I gave it a mechanical inspection. At another table I found a dealer that had several sets of S&W stocks for sale and bought these Smooth Target Stocks for $40. They really make a difference for my large hands compared to the standard Magna's.

It was one of those days that reminded me that for every 5 gun shows I went to that I wasted $25 on admission and parking and another $25 on gas to get there, I found a deal that made it all worthwhile. The double action won't compare to a K frame but the single action is quite good and so is the accuracy when I do my part. I can really see why it was called a Kit gun. The size and weight are about perfect for a hike or camping.
