Hi,

I am thinking of replacing the stock hammer and trigger on my 629-6 with non-MIM parts.
Any suggestions on best parts to purchase?

Parts are different as well as geometry inside and will not interchange.

I never heard of this, but is possible I suppose. Just to confirm, hammers and triggers from MIM guns won't work in forged guns, and vice versa, is this correct?

If it is true, then I suppose you shouldn't have bought a gun with MIM parts if you didn't want them.

I suppose there is a learned treatise, possibly somewhere on this site, as to why MIM parts are "inferior" to cast, CNC, etc.

If you're leery of MIM parts, you probably shouldn't fly in airplanes, drive a car or truck, use computers, go to a doctor/hospital, etc., etc. The list goes on and on....

But I digress. Replacement parts are available through Brownells. They will tell you if a non-MIM part will fit your firearm.

How bad you want them? You can use a K, L, or N forged trigger but the only forged S&W hammers for FMFP N frames (that I know of) were from 627s and my understanding is that S&W used up the last of their supply quite a while ago.

I have an almost new forged hammer and trigger that came out of a 627. They're the silver S&W finish. Hammer has the "heart" shaped spur. They're assemblies, all the pinned parts are in place. Trigger has the over-travel stop in its' back side.

They're rare and won't be cheap if you're really interested.

I have traded machined and MIM parts back and forth lots of times. Some need a little fitting, some don't, just as it has been for 100 years. All triggers fit K,L,&N, hammers are frame specific.

Does your revolver have the firing pin in the frame or on the hammer?

Visually, I greatly prefer the looks of a colorfully case hardened hammer and trigger to the looks of MIM parts, but I can't honestly say one is better than the other for shooting purposes.

Aside from aesthetics, I can't think of a reason to do such a swap. But aside from the possible 627 hammer swap mentioned in Post #7 (I haven't seen one) you are pretty much not going to use an old style N frame hammer in a newer revolver due to the firing pin difference.

Trigger? Maybe. The older triggers are less uniform than the newer MIM units, so could very well be dramas in "dropping in" an assembly. (I've noted that even MIM engagement surfaces sometimes have a bit of factory "tweaking".)

From a practical standpoint it would make more sense to buy an older revolver and just settle for being a nostalgic sort of fellow.

I am no expert at all, so if I am wrong, please feel free to correct this - I have a 4566 TSW with MIM controls (black and you can see the seams), but I have also see 4566 (non-TSW) models with the stainless controls (hammer, trigger and slide lock), so unless S&W goes to extra effort to manufacture different frames (or machine them differently), the parts should interchange - at least I think so.

Why do you wan to do this? If there's something wrong with your stock parts, send it back to S&W. If it's not broken, why do you wan to fix it?

I agree with the others asking why

But

I also understand wanting something but not having a good reason
