I removed the rear sight many years ago, to install a scope. I have decided to return to sights once again. I had the sight in a basement and through dampness, only the blade got rusty. When I tried to turn the screw to hopefully remove the blade, I believe the screw broke inside. I am not going to attempt to repair it, however, I cannot seem to locate a new rear sight. It is a blued model 57, 8&3/8 barrel, mfg in 1980. I tried calling S&W, they sent me to Jack First, who no longer had these in stock. Should I simply send the gun back to Smith & Wesson for repair ? I have been to many gun shows and have not been able to locate a new (or used) rear sight for this type of "N" frame revolver. I would appreciate any input. Thank you in advance. As others have posted Brownell's and Midway usually have the blade, screw and sight nut needed. I have recently purchased those parts online to replace a damaged rear sight blade on my pre model 27.

Breaking the screw is actually part of the procedure for removing the sight blade for replacement. You turn it one way til it breaks and you remove everything carefully to replace with new rear sight blade. You turn it the opposite direction and the screw breaks.......only you cranked everything to the cylinder release side of the frame and it pretty much seizes there. I know because I've done it before hahaha. What I and one of my best friends did was put a very thing high quality bit in his fathers old drill press. Holding the assembly only (removed from the frame) we drilled out the end of the screw from the middle of the nut (see left side of photo) and wiggled the remainder out slowly. I also put a link to how to reassemble new nut, screw, and sight blade with your old spring and plunger which are minuscule to say the least. Good luck. - Joe

According to the chart of common S&W revolver adjustable rear sight blade sizes your model 57 with an 8 3/8" barrel uses a rear sight blade #04073 that is .160" in height.
