Would a person remove the rear sight from L to R, R to L, or does it not matter what direction they're removed from?

What about for installation of new sights? What direction? L to R?

Thanks!

As viewed from above, typically
out L to R
in R to L.
Don't know if it applies to S&W's 1911' so,
YMMV?

Never quite understood why this is. The sights and dovetail are both square, so it should'nt matter, but I've heard this a bunch of times.

Ok.

I've only ever messed with SIG and XD sights. They can generally be removed from either direction, but can only be installed from the left side, going to the right. ( As viewed from the firer's perspective )

I was told once, it mattered due to the side the tooling approached the work. I chose not to argue it, since the guy who said it was born the same year the pistol came into service?
Besides it was my Dad, and he'd of kicked my a..!
But,
It could very well have something to do with a taper on the sight dovetail as well, rather than the milling in the slide. The taper on the sight never being rammed all the way through the cut would have assured a secure interference fit, without the need for microscopic accuracy.

Spotteddog,
That all makes sense. Its funny how a mill cuts different with the table feeding one way or the other.

Can't say I ever checked if a sight was tapered?
