Cleaning cylinder face on blued gun

Carbon Killer Slip 2000 makes a product called Carbon Killer. It comes in a jar and you simply remove the cylinder assembly and submerge it for 30 minutes or so. Then remove and just wipe off the carbon stains. Carbon Killer is like a soapy solution that will dry out the metal surfaces, so...

Help with background of my latest PC 629

I have the identical gun in a 629-4. Jjbrewst1 is correct with the product code and serial number prefix. Mine did come with the Altamont RB grips. I have a number of 629's and this one is spooky accurate. It shoots like a proverbial rifle and is about the best of my collection, which...

    629 club

WOT Hoyt, Hang on to that 629-3 S&W factory sight with the longer base, they are not all that easy to find and replace. They are sturdier than you think. S&W changed to the shorter sight base in about 1994 or thereabouts when they went to the -4 version. Brownells sells a replacement blade...

    629 club

WOT Hoyt, The sight base, and corresponding channel in the top strap of the revolver are a bit longer on the 629-3 than it is on the 629-4 and subsequent models. Your revolver shows this difference. The 629-3 uses a small screw to affix the rear sight to the gun at the very front of the sight...

    Weird 629 problem

Trigger Shims The difference in trigger pull that you describe could be related to excessive side-to-side play with the trigger. The way to remove it is to use trigger sideplate shims that are sold by Power Custom, also by Brownells. Each shim is .002" thick and serves to remove the slop and...

Help with 629 Performance Center differences.

I have a 629 Magnum Hunter like buck460XVR has displayed in his post. Mine is also scary accurate. It is a 3 piece barrel system with a shroud, a screwed on muzzle brake that acts as a nut and an internal barrel that is match grade and manufactured by Lothar Walther. Using this system, the...

Wolff "Power Rib" Type 2 reduced power Mainsprings

Mike McClellan called good money on the strain screw. If you go with the Wolff Power Rib spring, you should start out with a new strain screw, which is just a couple of bucks from Brownell's. I found that most of mine were too short from the factory to use with the Wolff spring. If you have...

Ejector Rod slightly bent... what effect?

While you are at it, you might like to make sure you have proper yoke alignment. This is done by using a precision ground spud that drops into the yoke barrel after you remove the cylinder assembly. Move your yoke into battery and when you pull back on the cylinder release latch, the pin end on...

Trigger overtravel on N frame only

Shuz, You are correct, I changed the numbers from my previous post. Damn good thing I rely on measuring tools rather than an aging memory. Good catch. Mike

    Clean burning 44 Mag Powder

My preference is for Vihta Vuori powders. With VV 3N37, I get great shooting loads in the 1,250 fps range for a 240 JHP bullet and with VV N-110, I get loads in the 1,400 + fps range. These are chronographed loads that are not far from published velocities from VV load data. Accuracy is superb...

Trigger overtravel on N frame only

You can buy these pins at the hardware store in the section where they sell bolts, nuts and screws. These are approx. .093" diameter and .750" long. They have to be shortened to fit a particular gun, and in particular the specific hammer and trigger. I have found that a length of .705" to...

how about a 44 magnum show

CWH44300, The muzzle brake serves to tighten the barrel and shroud onto the frame and is not removable for the end user. S&W uses a three piece barrel assembly on this model. The actual barrel itself is a benchrest grade Lothar Walther barrel that is button rifled. I have this model except...

How do you get the powder residue off a stainless gun?

Carbon Killer Slip 2000 makes a product called Carbon Killer that does a terrific job of removing carbon fouling, particularly from cylinders and pistol barrels. It is a solution that you submerge your part/cylinder/barrel in for a hour or so and then wipe the carbon fouling off. It is...

    627 Pro Rear sight problem.

It sounds like the rear sight blade could have been installed crooked at the factory. It had happened to one of my S&W revolvers. Take the sight completely off the gun and use a good set of dial calipers with parallel jaws to make that determination. The left side will still be high measuring...

    New 625 JM problem

To add to what kennyb said about using the right tool from Brownells - do not get too heavy handed when tightening the ejector rod. If you crank it too tight you can induce runout into the ejector rod, which will in turn cause your cylinder to bind when rotated. I have a fixture with a dial...

    Limited run 629's???

The 629 Magnum Hunter shown by buck460XVR has a three piece barrel assembly: the inner rifled barrel, the shroud and the muzzle brake which screws on and serves to tighten the inner barrel to the shroud and both to the frame. The inner rifled barrel started out as a rifled blank made by Lothar...

    Limited run 629's???

buck460XVR Part of that scary accuracy comes from the Lothar Walther barrel that is sleeved within the outer shroud. These barrels are put on many of the Performance Center revolvers and are considered to be benchrest grade. I have a 629 just like yours and it is also scary accurate.

PIC REQUEST: 629 Classic with X frame grips

No pics to offer but that is the grip for the round butt 629. I have that grip on my 629s -3 through -7, all round butt grip frames. It does indeed tame recoil and changes the 629 into a different gun, recoil wise.

    Blew up my compensator!

Threadlocking Compound I use Vibra-Tite which is a threadlocking compound that I got from MSC Corp. It is used differently than Loctite in that you apply it to the threads, allow it to dry for 30 minutes and then reassemble. It is designed to allow the screws to be moved or removed but not...

.44 Magnum Load for Bear that's Safe to Shoot in 629

Ditto on what Gun 4 Fun said about sight adjustment. There can be a significant change in point of impact from a .44 magnum revolver when you increase or decrease bullet weight. Just make sure your sights are dialed in for what you intend to use. Take care. Mike
