M&P 15-22 Ejection Port Dust Cover by PainterlyShotGroup review.

Showed the high res photos to my gun nut friend.. He said.. Wait... Did it or didn't it come with a dust cover? I said it didn't.. He said "I thought so, but dang that looks factory!" :)

Really? Thats awesome!

As an aside, I tried firing the gun with the dust cover closed and it works nicely. However, the first time I did this, after a couple of times the magnet broke off. I have since made a fix for the cover (I make a wider base for the magnet as well as recessing the magnet so it sits flush). I just got back from testing it out again. This time I ran through 50 rounds of various ammo (remminton bulk, federal match bulk, Aguilla super max) re-closing the door each round, and out of those 50 shots I had 6 FTE's. Some of which may have been the ammo, but I'm sure the door came into play. On the whole though, the door opens beautifully when you shoot the gun with it closed. Understandably most people won't be re-closing the door for each shot.

I'll upload photo's of the fix soon.

Just thought I'd update you guys on how it functions in this regard. Brett I sent you a PM, but let me know if you want me to send you the fix for the magnet.

Doug,

Nope I'm good bud! Post up some photos when you get the time! I think the recessed magnet idea should make the back side of the door look even better!

Just installed PainterlyShotgroup's new dust cover on my 15-22 and it really rocks. This is a well built, fully functional dust cover that when installed properly looks like a factory part. It even allows you to shoot with the cover closed. Fine addition to the gun. It looks so nice I'd like to get another one for the other side;) but then everything in moderation. I highly recommend this item. It is great looking as well as functional. Thanks Painterly.

Doug,

Not yet.. I need to call my Mother's hubby up and go do some range time together. Haven't been to the range in a month! Next time there I will be taking the 15-22 and putting her through the paces :)

Please be sure to let me know how it goes.

Use the Dust Cover on M&P .223 Sport?

Doug,
How do you think this might work on the new Sport Version of the M&P 15? It does not come with a dust cover but just wondering if the bolt would move with much more force than a 22 LR of course?

If you think it would work, it would give you another market.

It looks great and would buy one in a split second if you think it would stay on.

Thanks, George

Hey George,
I'd need measurements of the ejection port cover on the sport model. I took a look at some photos of one and it seems the ejection port opening eats into the brass deflector somewhat. I'm not sure if that would end up being an issue. I am kind of confused as to why S&W left both a forward assist and dust cover off of that model .223. I can understand with a .22 but wouldn't the sport model .223 be machined with the same high tolerances as the other M&P15's? In any case, just off the top of my head I am almost thinking you'd be better off using a normal AR dust cover door, since the bolt on the sport has the notch in it. I think where I'd come in, is maybe making a hinge plate for the normal AR door to connect to so you can mount it on your gun.
However, if you like my design, I'll build you one to the dimensions of the ejection port of your gun and you can test it out. I think you might be right about having a market there.
Let me know...

Would these dust covers still be available for purchase? I have a 15-22 and it's the one thing I really wish I had, and this one looks NICE!

I just got mine in the Mail today, I am so impressed cannot wait to attach. Will get pics & report up asap.

Thank you again.

*Also Any you can make one a bigger to fit the MP-15 Sport?

so...what exactly is the point of these?

It Covers the Bolt Carrier blocking Dust , Dirt & Sand in the Wind while not being Fired. Hence "Dust Cover"

But this is the Defined Pourpose... & could go In OP I guess for people not knowledgable.

""Improves reliability and function; prevents unnecessary wear. Keeps dirt and debris from entering through the ejection port and obstructing the action.""

so basically you're saying it's a solution to a problem, that doesn't exist?

Yeah kinda one of those things.. Did I need an M4 front end? Nope.. Did I want an M4 front end? YEP.... Dust covers don't really apply to ANY non Military or LEO rifle, because I think most of us take care of our weapons. But with that said.. It's a worthwhile addition! :)
