My experience with bulk Remington golden bullets with my 15 22
Hi all, just wanted to give my input on remington golden bullet bulk ammo that i had yesterday. It fired with no ftf, but on last round fired it wouldnt hold bolt open if I put more then 12 rounds in my 25 round magazine. The bolt would hold open if I put less then 12 in it. I tested this 5 times with golden bullets.Funny thing is is with the same magazine I loaded 25 rounds my gun with cci mini mags and the bolt held open after last shot fired 5 times in a row. I know every gun is different with ammo but can anyone explain this mystery, why one ammo holds open the bolt and another kind doesn't? Happy shooting everyone 😎👍

Do you have another magazine to test.
When I got mine a year ago I functioned with Golden Bullets from a 1400 round bucket and everything else I fed it except Federal blue box Champion ammo.
My 22lr stash is now only CCI mini mags and CCI Tactical that I bought when Walmart had them for $6.00/100
I put an Exact Edge extractor in the 15-22 even though I didn't encounter any issues with the factory one.
IMO,a great rifle at a very good price when on special a Academy.

It is a great gun! Tested it with 3 different magazines. Same results as stated above. Left me scratching my head lol

MY GUESS
It's something to do with the gold faerie dust that gets on your hands just from holding them, IMO it can't be doing the internals any good either also my opinion. My 15-22 after app 2,000 rounds wouldn't eject any unfired rounds. Even after what looked like a good thorough cleaning it still happened. The fix was to simply strip the bolt & clean that, it was gummed up with the gold dust. After that discovery, no issues. Better/cleaner ammo & not over oiling let me get more bullets downrange before a bolt strip was needed. My Guess/final answer. Good luck.

Agreed, my hands are dirty after just loading one clip. Instead of golden bullets should be lead bullets. It's like shooting thunderbolts lol

Load one CCI first, then the Rem Gold. If it stays open after last
shot the Rems don't have the fuzz to bring it back far enough
to open position.

It's just another chapter in "The curse of the Golden bullet". I gave up trying to get that junk to run in anything years ago. My advice is to try different ammo and never look back.

If the round doesn't have the power to open the bolt completely then it won't lock open. The bolt is probably short stroking with the crummy golden Bullets. I won't shoot them anymore. Accuracy is terrible with them.

The OP stated the bolt would lock open if he loaded his 25-round magazine with less than 12 rounds. It would not lock open on last round (using same magazine) if he loaded it with 12 or more rounds.

I have been using that ammo, from the bucket, on my third bucket, with 6 magazines and only thing I have found it's dirty ammo.
I haven't had any failures from the bolt not locking on the last rounds.
So far 3 thousands rounds has been fired with 6 mag.
I also clean my magazines after firing 300 rounds, like I said that ammo is dirty.
Here is my yesterday shoot.

Mine is hit and miss with a Remington Golden Bullets. I run CCI, Winchester, Aquila ok and my S&W M&P .22 LR Compact pistol runs everything.
Just the nature of .22 LR.

I haven't fired my 15-22 in a few months. I'm just finishing the last few rounds of my 3 1400 round Rem Golden bullets. In the last 3 range trips I've had a split case "fail to extract" each time when using the ammo in my Ruger SR22 pistol.
The first two times I thought it was because I was outside and it was about 40 deg F.
Today I was at an indoor range an the temps were in the 70's
Not sure what is going on.

Been using golden bullets primarily for over 8 years. Never had a problem. Not as accurate as CCI, but definitely workable. Probably shot well over 5K rounds without an issue.

If you offered to give me a life supply of golden bullets and paid the freight as well I would turn the offer down. Life is to short to shoot with substandard ammo.
Fifty years ago they made a good product - firearms as well as ammo. But not in the last 30 years. Not just .22s, but brass and guns as well.
After going thru the trouble of sending defective products back time after time I give up.

I haven't put any Golden Bullets through my 15-22 yet. They worked fine in my Ruger 10-22, but the groups were considerably better wirh CCI. I have only used CCI in my 15-22 for that reason.

A bit of history including Golden Bullet.
When the 15-22 was first released it was plagued with out-of-battery discharges. The 15-22 manual was soon updated with recommended and not recommended ammo. Golden Bullet was on the DOES NOT RECOMMEND list. Sometime years later S&W updated the manual again and doesn't have specific recommendations.
Previous 15-22 manual page 10.

I wish that was in the manual for my SW22 Victory. I shot over 2k rounds thru it and not even half way thru a box of Remington Thunderbolt the pistol decided to ditch it's extractor, spring & plunger and the inside of the barrel looked like a filthy 3rd world sewer pipe. I had to send it back to S&W not even a month after owning it for repairs.
Yes, I'm embarrassed to say that my cleaning rod got stuck in the barrel trying to scrub that filth out of it and in the process it snapped off, effectively spiking my own gun. I'm not even convinced Remington uses lead in their bullets.

I shoot Federal Auto Match. I have found them to be very clean running and reliable. Had ejection problems but after a trip back to S&W for a replacement ejector it is flawless.

I bought my rifle in November, and have Manual Rev MP15-22_RIFLE_020517. The only ammo caveat is not to use CCI Stingers in the Performance Center Model, but they are OK in the Standard Model.

CCI , problems with wax, Remington, are very dirty, Aquila good but use HV. Federal make sure it's 40G.
I see a lot of extractors being replaced, learn how it's assembled and you'll see that 90% of the time it 's working it's way out of the groove, no need to send back. You'll never wear them out.

I think earlier post by DRM50 nailed it. The Remington is probably just a tad lighter than the CCI on the rearward bolt travel.
I personally like the Remington Gold and never had a problem with it. It does put out some soot, but I have been shooting my 15-22 since they came out and have never done anything except wipe the bolt and oil it again and have had no problems with Rem Gold.
