Picked up a compact from PSA when they had them for $249. the day i got it i started with tow mags of CCI Minimags, then two mags of Federal automatch, and finally several mags of Winchester bulk. had one failure. The first round of the win bulk didnt cycle the slide enough to pick up the next round. all other after that first round cycled fine. hits were low so i adjusted the rear sight up a bit. decent enough accuracy to get 7-8 hits out of a mag on a 12" plate @ 50 yards.

Yesterday i decided to tear it down to examine the internals and polish the contact surfaces. used 1000 grit sand paper and then polished with flitz on the rear guide blocks and around the neck of the barrel where the slide makes contact. also did this on the feed ramp. also stoned the hammer engagement surface a bit.

So i wanna remove both the mag and manual safeties. Looking at the internals on the mag safety i should be able to just dremel off this bent lip that stops the trigger bar from moving backwards. (punch pin is pointing to this lip in the pix below). i dont believe i see any other purpose of this lip. anyone agree that this would remove the mag safety?

onto the manual safety. Pix of the exposed sear block below. Note that the rear roll pin holds the block in place. there is another solid pin that holds the sear in place under spring pressure. it has a grove on it that the sear spring rides in. i would remove this solid pin first. the sear and spring might come out of the block so note the spring placement. Then remove the roll pin. also note the sear block is under pressure from the hammer spring down in the grip. it might jump out too. once removed the safety bar will practically fall away. its held in place by the same solid pin that holds the sear. looking at its mechanics it only stops the trigger bar from moving backwards. so im thinking i can remove the safety bar by using a flat washer on each side of the sear block to take up the space. they would need to be about the same thickness as the safety bar. thoughts on this? if i wanted to keep the bar i could also just dremel off the bar near the external safety levers and be done with it.

left side block (roll pin is holding everything in place)

UPDATE

worked on my compact a bit. removed the mag safety by driving out the trigger pin from right to left.. i also removed the manual safety levers but just cutting them off with a dremel. i tried a couple ways to remove it without just cutting but this was the easiest solution. there is a small spring that holds the sear pin in place that is held in place by the safety bar. so i decided to keep it. maybe someone will make some frame plugs to fill the holes.

i also undercut the trigger guard, cut a notch for my weak hand index finger, blacked out the rear sight and stippled it. also made an iwb holster since im using the compact as a trainer for my Shield.

couple vids of me running the compact on my tree

I guess I'm old school. "if it ain't broke, don't "fix" it", was an old term that comes to mind. I don't mind having a workable safety on my .22 compact, as I'm not using this for self defense.
I shoot mostly wheel guns, in double-action, so the (lighter) trigger pull on the compact is a non-factor for me. I like mine in the stock configuration just fine, however, if you've got the time and desire, knock yourself out! It looks like you've got it diagnosed pretty well.

That's pretty interesting that it is a separate piece compared to the one piece chassis of the full sized 22... Does the slide still just rest on the rear section?

I'm picking up my can't-believe-the-PSA-price .22 Compact today, and the first thing I'll be removing is the magazine disconnect. For me, a magazine disconnect comes under the heading of "It is broke..."

There's a great thread over on NFATalk where one of the members is doing some amazing work on his Compact. He starts by removing the mag disconnect, and has a good explanation of how to do it.

Details here: NFA Talk

He's also completely machined a new stainless steel barrel and remove any slop for the slide. The guy's quite the machinist, and the thread is fascinating.

Too bad. It's worth joining just to read what this guy is doing to the Compact. I wish he would sell the replacement SS barrel he made. The guy is a true artist.

Here's his quick and dirty on the mag disconnect:

This is simple. With the takedown lever rotated down, drift out the trigger pin from right to left just enough to release the disconnect bar. It's in its own slot in the frame so there isn't a need to insert a spacer. That's another plus I guess.

My 22 Compact is about 2 months old with about 300 rounds through it. I am ready to work on the trigger but only to smooth things out and hopefully improve the pull pounds too. I actually like the magazine lock and really don't understand why anyone would want or need to remove it.

I think the mag. disconnect is OK on this kind of gun but I would not have one on a carry gun. JMHO
