Default Fair used price for late model SD9VE?

Hi everyone. New forum member, long time Smith revolver owner but never an owner of Smith semi-autos. I've been looking recently for a glovebox gun and came across what I think is a good deal on a late model SD9VE (has the front slide serrations). Seller is local, and the gun looks barely used. He's asking $275.

Does that seem like a fair price? I've heard these triggers take getting used to, which I'm fine with (good excuse to go to the range more!), but I'm just wondering if a used M&P for a hair over $300 (LE trade-in from CDNN) would be a better option? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
The SD9VE is a nice lil pistol
Local Academy had them new for $289.
So $275 seems a little high for used.

Up my way they are selling for $319-349 new so $275 for one that is like new would be a fair price to me.

Locally there was a SD40VE with only 50 rounds through for $275 or best offer. Just looked and it's been sold. If I had the extra coin I would have bought it. It was listed yesterday and gone this morning.

That wpuld be a great price used here in MI as well.
MP is a very nice pistol as well...however, unless you know the officer that turned it in, I'd pass.

I think I would hold off and buy a new one. You have to remember that the warranty will be void once the original owner sells it. I think the lifetime warranty is worth at least $100.
I purchased a barely used SD9VE with one magazine for $229 plus $20 transfer. It seemed like a great deal at the time but then I purchased a second magazine for $35. That had me at $265 total for the pistol.
Two weeks later I was at another gun shop that was selling them new for $319. I purchased the SD40VE there. So for a extra $54 I got a new one with the warranty. I don't think I would purchase a used one for more than $200 but that's my opinion.
Also you can't assume you won't need the warranty, I am in the process of returning my new SD40VE due to severely bulged brass case's. Smith & wessons customer service has been great so far. I would also ask myself why are they selling a like new one? Are there problems and they don't want to be bothered sending it back?

I think that, depending on where you are and what they sell for new, this "could" be a good price. Before going used, i would want to know why the gun is being sold. There could be an issue or it could be that the seller just wants to move to a different gun. You just never know. I always say used items are used for a reason. But, sometimes you can find a real bargain. As to the trigger, it is a long pull and does take some getting used to but it's not an insurmountable issue.

I like the idea of a new one. If you live in a town that has an Academy, they sell new for $319, I got mine on sale for $299. Mom and Pop stores typically sell for around $349 - $369.

Used LE trade in's can be a great deal, but would inspect it with a fine tooth comb, they can also be beat up.

M&Ps will draw more money, but I won't pay a nickle for the extra backstraps because the SD has perfect ergonomics for me as is. And the SD hits exactly where it's pointed at lightoff as does the M&P, I'm sure.

as the others have mentioned that is either just a little high or decent price depending on where you live - just make sure it has 2 magazines as that is what they come with new-if it only has one that isnt a good price - if by chance it has more than 2 then it is a good price as magazines are around $40

Unfortunately, it doesn't. S&W's warranty is to the original owner only. They don't always ask, and if the original owner didn't "register" (i.e., mail in the warranty card, or do it online) the gun with S&W when they purchased it (not required) S&W probably won't have it on record as purchased. If they ask for proof of purchase, though, the warranty claim would be denied. Besides, from a personal ethics standpoint, it isn't fair to S&W to try to "slip one past them." (I'm not saying anyone here would, just a general comment.)

It's very hard to find new SDVE pistols for sale, especially in Academy Sports...when they had them on sale for $289, my local store got in 20 of the 9mm models, and sold them all within two days. None of the stores in the DFW area have the 9mm or the 40 models. I bought a SD40VE in a local shop for $339, which was higher than I wanted to pay, based on Academy's regular price of $319, but the $20 difference was what I'd have spent in gas driving all over trying to find one.

Does the SD9VE come with two magazines? New, they do...and if this one doesn't, that's another $40 right off the bat you'd need to spend.

It's hard to know why someone is selling a barely used gun. Maybe they need money...maybe it was an impulse buy, and they just don't like the trigger...maybe they bought it for their spouse and the spouse can't handle it. Knowing the real reason for the sale is dependent on the honesty of the seller, and that's not always a known factor. If the warranty transferred, then you'd be covered...but since it doesn't, you'd be on the hook yourself for any issues.

Unless money is a very big issue, I'd pass on a used gun that is still in production, unless the price was a LOT lower. The M&P sounds like a better deal price-wise, since it's about $200 less than new retail. LEO trade-ins are usually not fired that much, but they can be rough cosmetically...it doesn't affect the function, but still it's a factor.

All things considered, I'd buy a new gun if I possibly could. Some guns are no longer in production, so if you want one (like a S&W 3913, for example) you have to buy used...but other than something like that, I'd buy new.

I agree $275 is about the right mark with 2 mags, I was lucky to pick my sd9ve up for $280 with 3 mags.

I would not pay more than $200 for a used one & that is only if I could check to make sure the trigger springs have not been messed with, unless you know what to look for or they will let you shoot it first. I would just keep looking until I found a new one for close to $300.
Great pistol had mine almost two years, stopped counting rounds at 2500 a while back & would not sell it.

Off handedly saying $275 is high for a "like new" used gun is relative, as regional gun prices can vary dramatically.

New SD9VE's are still going for $289 at Academy here when they are "On Sale". Their normal price is $329.

You can add $30-$40 to that price tag if purchased from smaller local Ma & Pop gun shops.

Personally I stay away from used guns as much as I can unless it's a great deal or hard to find model. $275 is way high for the gun that's not even 10% under retail! used guns should fall between 25%-15% under retail. 25% being good condition 15% being excellent. Several things to consider with used gun, most important is that it might be stolen so use FFL. Then you have warranty issues along with unknown actual condition of gun. Unless you really know what your doing I'd pass on buying used guns.

On one hand, the price seems high because you can buy a new one with a lifetime warranty for about $75 more. On the other hand, I can't blame him for asking that much. I would.

As for the police trade-in M&Ps... others may disagree, but I'd avoid them because they're likely to be "first generation" guns and I understand S&W has redesigned some parts in the new models. JMHO-YMMV

Default $275 for used/excellent SD9VE?

I actually prefer buying used/like new firearms IF can do so without 1) paying sales tax and more important to me 2) without the fed paperwork. Our freedoms are eroding by the day and I fear things will get worse before they get better.

Just my .02 but I picked one up(SD9VE) at a local gun show for 303.00 plus tax. I have heard of some large stores selling them for 289.00 plus tax. I think S&W warranty would transfer but not 100% sure. I would show him 250.00 cash and walk if he does not take it.

Default Used price for SW SD9VE

Thanks for the input on a fair sales price. I'm planning to sell mine to get a CZ 75 SP-01. I have only about 600 rounds thru it. Two mags and had the trigger kit put in. Where's a good place to advertise it? I live in the Kansas City area. Does $250 sound about right? Thanks

I paid $289.99 for mine new and have seen them for $10 cheaper. However, the local Cabelas had one just like mine that they wanted more for it used than I paid for mine new. I think $250 would be a fair price.

I see these guns on sale for about $260.

I can't imagine anyone only paying $10 less for it being used even with the $20 trigger kit. I know I wouldn't.

I would offer someone $210 most, since for only $50 more I could get brand new.

So many people ' play gunsmith ' and mess up the trigger on these guns , the only way I would pay anything for a used one is if I could take it apart & shoot it first.

As micocyco stated......"So many people ' play gunsmith ' and mess up the trigger on these guns , the only way I would pay anything for a used one is if I could take it apart & shoot it first." I go even further with it...
With the quality of some guns coming from the manufacturing plants and the "stick it to the buyer" not covering warranties except for the original owner, not to mention the hack jobs from the many gun owners that purchase and destroy their first couple of guns doing half ***** job of attempting mods to a perfectly good gun, I just do not buy used guns at all anymore.

I am sort of looking at getting a very compact .22 to keep in the car, or sometimes in my pocket. I have a license but don't plan to carry every day, just when I think it makes sense.

I just bought a Colt 1911 Gold Cup .22 to shoot for fun and it will go to the range with my SD9 next time out but it won't be the car gun.

Anyhow, back to the main issue, I will stick with new guns, especially after seeing many YouTube video's in which even new guns fail during range testing or only work well with specific ammo. I have only tried a few loads in my SD but they all worked.

Finally, this forum is just filled with reports of modifications to brand new guns, even before being fired, that end up with reliability problems. I don't want to buy someone else's problem. I'll stick with S&W support.
