Just wanted to show off my latest Smith. Picked up this Model 39 no dash with the original numbered box for a bit under $500. The gun is flawless and only looks to have had a couple of mags put through it. It came with three magazines but unfortunately was missing the instruction manual and tools. Overall, I'm really happy with the condition of the gun. What do you guys think? How did I do?

Think you did very well indeed! Tough to find to begin with often and many times going for $250 more and higher depending on condition. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, that was a truly great score at a great price. Actually, they are historic as the first American DA semi auto. The Pre Model 39, 39 and -2 are great guns. The no dash Model 39 is not often seen. Congratulations.

As a collector item, the 39 "no dash" is a fine piece, and yours is in great condition. Well worth the price you paid.

As a shooter, I would only recommend one precaution. NEVER chamber a round by hand and then drop the slide on it. ALWAYS chamber the first round fed from the magazine. The Achilles heel of the the early 39s were broken extractors, and most often those failures were from improper chambering of the first round. Also, unfortunately, replacement first model extractors are no longer available from the factory, and are rarely found from the parts purveyors.

I treasure my 39-2. It has the newer extractor, and has never failed to function perfectly. I have shot it in combat-style matches knowing I would be alibi-free. In my opinion, nothing except perhaps the Remington Model 51 pistol fits most hands better. The Model 52 "Master" .38 Special target pistol uses the same style grip frame probably for that reason.

Wow 3k!!! No wonder we are seeing an influx of synthetic offerings. I bought my first 39 new in 1974. I assume it was a 39-2. Recall paying $125 for it. How times have changed!

Many of the Model 39 pistols in that SN range were bought by the USAF to issue to Generals. When found, they are often LNIB. I think yours is worth a letter.
