Now that the Shield is available with a red dot sight, has anyone considered putting one on a 3913 or a 6906? Is it even possible to mill the slides to take one? For someone who doesn't care for plastic guns, it would sure be a sweet carry piece.

Check Numrich. They have a "Laseraim" unit that looks like it mounts to the round trigger guards on the 3900/5900 guns. I don't know anything else about it, but it might do what you want.

If not, they have a pretty good return policy.

It's on the "Miscellaneous" page, not listed under Semi Autos.

I'd leave that kind of work to expendable plastic guns and not something that isn't made anymore. If you're willing to pay, I'm sure any gunsmith who specializes in that kind of work would find a solution.

3913 Ladysmith WITH a red dot

This is actually my first post but I've had my 3913 LS for over thirty years (!). I recently acquired a second upper assembly with the idea of attaching a red dot optic (gotta love ebay sometimes). After contacting several companies, finally went with Wright Armory as they did my Springfield XD. Attached is the finished product with a Holosun HE507K-GR X2 and looking forward to running some rounds through it later this week.

I have been really considering this for my 3953. My eyes really need the help. But how does it affect the balance and “feel” of the recoil?

I've had Guzzitaco put a Sig Romeo on one of my 745's and my , I know I know , my Recon45 . Now Sig makes an even smaller Romeo so I'm looking at one of those on maybe my 3913 . It's rough getting old but at least I can hit the bullseye with these guns now . No problem with my other PC guns , just that Recon45 .

Hi OldHK...

I have mounted a few some for me, some for clients/friends. The easier and cheaper solution that I have found is the Tasco / Optima mount. It uses the shield pattern and with some mods it can accommodate a modified shield patterns.

For more info on mounting patterns, I recommends going to: Footprints/Mounting Standards on Red Dot Sights - Optics info

Here is the mount Tasco / Optima on a M5906 slide using a Sig Rome Zero:

Same mount on another custom M5906, using a Holosun 407 (base had to be modified slightly)

I built a custom front sight to co-witness with the U notch on the red dot.

Same Tasco / Optima mount on a Recon 45 (Cherrypointmarine's). Using a Sig Romeo Zero:

(mount had to be heavily modified to fit on the Recon 45 slide)

here is the same solution on a M745 slide:

(mount had to be modified to fir the M745)

Hope this helps,
:)

I don’t know how much longer it will last and both price and demand are going up, but slides from guns that have been legally “destroyed” - that is just the SN’ed frame actually - have been pretty commonly available for most of the Smith auto pistols if you seek them out. Rather than altering the slide on your gun irreversibly, I highly recommend doing as dmc3913 did and obtaining one of these orphans for customizing so the original can remain… original! I got two for my Model 639 Franken-Smith, one will get a red dot and the other a set of Millett adjustables.

Guzzi,

I can't tell from the pics. How is that mounted? Are you milling off the slide? Or does that mount follow the contour of the slide? Does it attach on the rear dovetail? Drilled and tapped?? Are you making a special attaching base or is it available?

Thanks,

Rosewood

Rosewood, I believe that at one time or another, friend Guzzi has done all of the above depending on the application and the parts available. If you are working with an “orphan” slide, you can make whatever alterations are needed… no harm, no foul!

With an adapter plate I put a Vortex Viper on my 4516-1.
I screwed up the adapter plate trying to make it fit in the dovetail, had to send it to bmcm to make it right .
He also did the double recoil spring and new milled guide rod and bushing. Along with changing the safety decocker to decocker only .He did a fabulous job.

Hi Rosewood,

No, I don't mill the slides for red dots. Why? Well, technology is moving at a very fast speed and every year we have better red dot with different mounting options. So,I rather try something less permanent.

The mount uses the rear dovetail.

The mount was designed to be used with a model 59XX pistol. It can be also used with a 69XX (same as a 39XX). I have used it with other models and I have had to modify the mount.

(modified to a model 745)

(modified for a model 745)

I don't believe this is the only option, however; I am convinced this is the cheapest and easiest alternative. The mount is made of aluminum, so there are sturdiest mounts and customs mounts that could be better. But this is an easy and affordable solution.

Some more info below:

Exactly what I was asking. Thanks!!
Where can one get the mount?

Edit:
NM, I found it in one of the links you posted. DOH!:D

Nice to see a revival of this thread. I have a spare top end that fits 3913/6906 and I thought a red dot would make for a modern take on an ASP. A Holosun 407K would be my choice. I currently carry a Walther PPS M2 with a RMSC optic, but I love the 39xx platform.

I also used that mount and it works great. One thing I did though was tapped a #6 hole for a set screw in the center of the dovetail piece for a little extra security since mine wasn't very tight in the dovetail.

Well, dangit, everyone that I have found listing that mount says sold out or discontinued. The hunt is still on.

That should be the link without the dot... $28. I hate how eBay sellers stuff their description with buzzwords that aren't the item for sale. GB does it too, hard to find what you want.
