I have a 5906 with Hogue rubber grips. I bought the straight back stock grips. How do I remove the Hogue grips? I found the S&W One Piece Wrap-Around Pistol Grip Disassembly/Assembly Instructions here on the forum so I should be ok once I get the Hogues off. Those directions mention a grip pin. The Hogues have two screws. I took those off but did not know the next step.

The grip component is held on by pressure with the molded stock piece, and secured by the pin. Many of the early 5906 grips were defective and would crack or break if dropped, keeping the gun from firing. S&W thus replaced those early grips FREE, so make sure you have the NEW grip.

As for getting the Hogues off, after you've removed the pins, just try prying them off. They may be snapped on with pressure like the plastic grips, I don't know. Use a small flat screwdriver and try loosening the sides and pulling back, away from the front of the gun until it comes off.

The Hogues use a adaptor, the part that has the two screws. The part that holds the mainspring is made into the factory grip. The original pin that holds the grips on is used to hold the Hogue adaptor in place, remove the pin and take the adaptor out to use the factory grips. get the grips started in at the top and spread them slightly to get them over the frame then reinstall the pin. The spring cup point actually holds the pin in place in it's recess.

Bear with me here. I still haven't attempted anything but to remove the two screws from the Hogues. I don't want to ruin or mar anything. With the grip screws out, I can start to separate the grips from the frame from the top of the grips? This sounds easier said than done. After I took out the screws, nothing seemed loose about the grips. Once I get the grips off, then I can remove the "Hogue adaptor" by removing a pin and then install the factory grips? It appeared to me that the Hogues are two separate grips whereas the factory is obviously one piece. Is that correct?

That's right, you might need to get a screwdriver in between the Hogue panels down near the screw holes to pry them apart. The panels hook under the frame in the middle of the front and at the top under the tang. When you install the factory grips you'll need to start them under the tang and watch the mainspring and spring cup slide into it's slot on the inside of the grip. Then after the grips are in place push in the pin that is holding the adaptor now.

After you remove the screws on the Hogue grip panels, use firm thumb pressure directed to the rear of the pistol, one side at a time - the rubbery material has sufficient 'grab' to permit this if your hands are dry) - it is important not to pry them if you wish to re-use them later. The panels can be pulled out and back once they have moved slightly to the rear. A tab holds the front edge to the frame; you are disengaging this tab by pushing the panel rearward. Drive out the pin from the adapter and ease the adapter back and down.

Be very careful when installing the factory wrap-around grip unit to avoid breaking the side-plate fingers by trapping the top of the side-plate under the top edge of the grip. Hope this helps - good luck.

Mission accomplished. Thanks for the help fellas. It will take getting used to it. It's more slippery but I can reach the mag release much better. I still may need to use my left thumb for the slide release. Some thread drift: once the grips are off, is there any need to spray oil on any of the mechanisms? I was used to doing that with my Sig P226. Taking the grips off was standard course for me when cleaning the Sig.

If you can find them, you might find that Uncle Mike's grips are an improvement over the factory grips, but not as thick as the Hogue grips. I found mine for my 5903 on EBay. I really like them a LOT better.!
