What are the differences between the 411 and the 4006? I have a 411 but I can't seem to find much info on it, but I see it's nearly identical to the 4006.

Right now I am looking for stock grips and mags for it and I am wondering if the parts are interchangeable. Any other info on the 411 would be a bonus.

From the 1993 catalog - grips and magazines interchange.

The 411 is basicly a Blued/Alloy framed 4006(4004?). It does have the older non-Novak rear sight but other than the stainless-vs-blue, the parts are the same. The '96 up 410 uses a few plastic parts and has simplier machining.

Differences:
  • Carbon steel slide and alloy frame
  • 2nd generation type rear sight (slide not machined for Novak)
  • Wider serrations cut into front of grip frame
  • No cross cutting on front of trigger guard
  • The frame in front of grip is wider and bulkier than 4006/4004
  • I believe the 411 came with only one magazine
The second generation type rear sight itself was cheaper than the Novak. In addition, S&W was saved time (and money) by not having to machine the slide to accept the Novak. Time (and money) was also saved by less cutting involved in the serrations on trigger guard and frame. Time (and money) was saved by leaving the front of the frame wide and bulky. One magazine is cheaper than two. The result is a Value Line pistol. My guess is that S&W's profit margin remained the same, they just shaved production costs and passed the savings on.

By the time they got to the 410 and 910, plastic parts started to showing up and the slides began to look squared off (less machining time and money). Frankly, true 3rd generation pistols just got to darn expensive. FWIW

Thanks for the info everyone. I think mine was built before they started using plastic parts.

Can somebody recommend a source for a slim or factory grip. I think the original was replaced by the previous owner and it's a little too fat for my hand.

The factory grip is the smallest, the 40s' came with the straight back grips where the 5900 series had arched, which would be close to the Hogues as far as grip angle. The factory grips are available from S&W or Brownells or Midway for around $18. There will a grip adaptor under your Hogues that you'll need to remove to install the factory grips, it's held on with the factory grip pin.

From what I can read and find is that the 411 is before the 410. The 411 is a step above the 410 and the 4006 is a leap above them both. My 410 has been kicking strong since I bought it in 99 or 98 cant remember. As for the 4006, it has more machining and fit and finish. Not to mention SS verses carbon. You can now get all of them a really good prices. Less 411's though. So you have a good pistol.
