1 each: best western and best military movie

While "Saving Private Ryan" certainly has the intense D-Day beach scenes, the rest is pure Hollywood. I mean really, the US Army could plan, coordinate and successfully execute the most complex command and control operation of the war, but has to rely on a single patrol to blindly search half of Normandy, most of which was still under German control, to find a single guy? Seems to me that simple radio call to the 101st's division HQ and use of the existing chain of command would be a lot more successful.

Best Western for me? "Silverado", for all the Western cliches all rolled into a single movie, plus its John Cleese Monty Python line.

While more in the western genre style, and not a "real" western, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is very high on my list. I believe it was Bogart's best performance. And while more of a comedy than a war movie, "Operation Petticoat" with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis is also a huge favorite of mine. I have watched both many times over. They don't get old, at least for me. Sort of like Howard Hughes - He used to sit and watch "Ice Station Zebra" continuously.

Right on. Same reason I chose "Restrepo"

For the more modern westerns, have to go with Unforgiven and 3:10 to Yuma.

And no one has yet mentioned the military film Bridge on the River Kwai, a true classic. That one really stuck with me since I was a child and I still watch it when it comes on. Have to back that up with The Great Escape and The Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen. OK, more than two.... lock me up.

Best western: Missouri Breaks. (Marlon Brando)

Best military: Young Lions. (Marlon Brando)

I like Brando movies.

Western: A lot of great ones have already been mentioned, so I'll add Blazing Saddles.

Military: The Caine Mutiny. Great acting all the way around. Humphrey Bogart deserved an Oscar.

Western tie - different time and genre - High Noon (Cooper was superb), The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, but out of the theater, the mini series Lonesome Dove was the best
Military - no question - mini series Band of Brothers, next Patton, by far the best theater length war movie

I think of one movie that's both military and western "They Came to Cordura," with Gary Cooper

Might change my mind on this some day, but for quite a while it's been ...

Last Train From Gun Hill

The Great Escape (with Twelve O'Clock High a very close second)
