A buddy has this CAI marked 10-5. The SN 2D30713. I thought 10-5 was from early 60's. The SN shows 1977 in the Std catalog. Can anyone narrow it down any? I assume it was an overseas contract with the CAI marking (on barrel flat on bottom of bbl). Not worth a letter and I dont want to bother Roy with a ship date.

Not claiming to be an expert but the way I read the SCSW the 10-5 and 10-6 revisions took place at the same time. However, the 10-5 only applied to tapered barrel models and the 10-6 only applied to heavy barrels. Both of these were manufactured at the same time. In 1977 the 10-7 revision affected both types and therefore was the only dash variation made. So it is very probable to have a 10-5 made in 1977 right at the end of the run.
I could be wrong though.:)

SW

That would make sense. The family history is dad acquired it in the 60s. But based on my family "history" I know how inaccurate that can be.

According to my database, it most likely shipped March/April time frame 1977. HTH

Thanks Ken. That is what I was looking for. Thanks for all the input guys. Got my first SW in 1977 and have never been without at least one. Started "collecting" 4-5 years ago. The more I learn the more I realize how little I know.

I picked up a 10-5 the other day, saw the tapered 4" barrel and it was love at first sight. Don't have a picture but I do have ser# D50XXX was wondering the year? 70s?

1968, according to the National Gun Forum. Link is in post #11.

Interesting how people like the tapered barrel.
I don't like it on the Model 10 because of the absence of an actual shroud or under-lug.

I am picking up a 10-6 tomorrow, which is the variant with the thicker and straight 4" heavy barrel. Without knowing about that detail I noticed the difference in appearance, liked that better.

Tapered barrels are great on M27, 29, 25, Mountain Guns, etc.
