10 year stopping power study

My office is in my LGS. According to the customers I’ve met that may or may not solemnly swear that they are up to no good, FMJ is popular in the streets because it’s cheap, feeds all the time, and achieves the intended goal. They use other words, of course . . .

In have always figured that the reason the weekend shooting numbers in Chicago every week do not have a higher percentage of fatalities is because the most common round used is probably 9mm 115 gr. FMJ

Had the caliber discussion with a LEO neighbor who was the our county Sheriff's firearms instructor until he retired, as well a member of the officer involved shooting investigation team.
His position was carry the caliber you can put rounds on target in the fastest amount of time. After that conversation I researched multiple studies that stated much the same, multiple hits were more important than caliber alone.
One study made a solid point - a citizen in a self defense scenario is trying to break off the attack and fast hits on an attacker are the best way to do it. Conversely, LEO's are in the gunfight until it ends, having to put down their targets, not drive them off.
Recently watched online footage of a skilled shooter using both a 365 9mm and a 365 .380. After putting a couple of hundred of timed rounds down range the .380 had a significant advantage in rounds on target within the same time frame due to the enhanced control of the lesser recoil handgun.

I just love "stopping power" threads! LOL! Just like best motor oil threads on motorcycle forums....I have NOT analysed any data on handgun stopping power but I am TOTALY certain that if my life depended on a one stop shot I would be using a 12 gauge shotgun with No.1 Buck. But the best bet is to avoid the places where the risks are that high. For people like me who already have extremely low odds of running into a thug intent on doing me harm...I would be happy to have a easily concealable, light handgun in just about any caliber. Thugs are stupid but none of them WANT to get shot with anything...

My thoughts exactly. People know what just happened and don’t want it to happen some more. They also are self-aware enough to try to get to a hospital.
Precisely my starting point in my page one reply #31.

Avoiding bad Bad Places is good when you can, but the bad people don’t always stay in the Bad Places.
The Good Places are where most of the Good Stuff is.
