I've always had an affinity for both the Smith and Wesson 3rd Gen pistols and the 10mm Auto round, so as you can imagine the 1006 and 1076 have been on my wishlist for a while. Because of the wonderful laws of the state that I reside in, none of the 3rd Gens are able to be sold except as a private party transfer, so all the ones that are available are sold at a premium. When I did find a 1006 sitting in a consignment section at an LGS, I jumped on it for for money than I'm willing to admit to. I could tell it was a beater of a gun, whoever had it before me had clearly not taken very good care of it. The original grips and even the recoil spring and guide rod were long gone, replaced by rubber Hogues and a Menck recoil buffer (though I had no idea what this was until I came to this forum) The finish had been redone by the previous owner with a scratched mirror finish on the slide and a dull gray frame. Taking it out to the range it was so gunked up that it wouldn't fire every other round until I sprayed some gunmedic into the firing pin channel.
I came to this forum with questions about the beater gun I was beginning to realize I'd probably overpaid for, and was directed to BMCM who quickly demonstrated his expert knowledge of these firearms, being able to pick out many issues both minor and major just from the substandard photos I provided. I'd been planning to send it to S&W for evaluation and bead blasting but decided that BMCM would do a better job on it instead. You can see his very detailed and informative takedown of it here (I'll also now take responsibility for the state it arrived to him in
. I'd given it a once over with some Ballistol and that definitely wasn't nearly enough)
Came back last week looking amazing, Bill had cleaned out every nook and cranny of the gun and refinished it to as close to a factory finish as I can imagine it'll get, manufactured a brand new guide rod and threw on a set of brand new Trijicon night sights at my request. Didn't have the chance to take it out until today, and it ate up 250 rounds of 10mm like a champ while handling better than any other 10mm I've shot (Glock 20 and Kimber Stainless Target). I'm definitely very impressed with both the gun and Bill's work and I'll be sending any other 3rd Gen I want to have work done on to him in the future. And since the gun was already 'shooter grade' to begin with, I have no reservations about continuing to shoot it, it'll likely accompany me to the range every time I go. If I ever have to start getting rid of my guns, it'll be the last to go for sure.
